A Review of My Current K-beauty cleansers: Tiam Snail & Azulene Low pH Cleanser Vs Frudia Citrus Brightening Micro Cleansing Foam.

The k-beauty (Korean beauty) rave is not for nothing guys! They usually have tons of effective and gentle skincare products like the Beauty of Joseon essence water. I currently have 2 k-beauty cleansers for my morning and nighttime routines and thought I should do a comparison since I have used them for about a month now.

As much as your routine should be suited to your personal taste, a cleanser is non-negotiable for healthy skin. What’s interesting is that cleansing is the most essential step but it’s usually overlooked or seen as boring. If cleansing is not done correctly, it can compromise the skin barrier

Cleansers are used to remove dirt and makeup on your skin. I recommend using a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin or cause irritation. That’s the reason I’m sharing my experience with these k-beauty cleansers so if they are something you want to try out, you can get an honest opinion about them first.

The Tiam Snail and Azulene Low pH Cleanser Review

Description

Tiam Snail and Azulene Low pH cleanser review
Directions-and-ingredients-of-the-Tiam-snail-and-azulene-low-pH-cleanser

This cleanser is from the popular TIAM brand and just like most Korean beauty products, it is gentle and packed with good ingredients.

It comes in a 200ml purple tube with a white cap that has a nozzle to dispense the product. You have to ensure it’s sealed properly to avoid spillage.

The Tiam cleanser has a transparent look and is gel-like in texture (a gel cleanser). It has a mild fragrance I can’t describe but it’s almost not noticeable.

Claims/ Ingredients

This k-beauty cleanser claims to be moisturizing and rids the skin of dirt and impurities without stripping it.

The ingredients as seen on YESSTYLE are:

mPurified Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Snail Secretion Filtrate (7%), Sodium Lauroylmethyl Isethionate, Sodium Chloride, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Butylene Glycol, Caprylyl Glycol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Allantoin, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Benzoate, Panthenol, Citric Acid, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Guaiazulene Sulfonate (50ppm)oisture.

Key components to note:

  1. Snail secretion filtrate (7%)– this is a soothing ingredient that is rich in hyaluronic acid and keeps the skin moisturized and supple.
  2. Allantoin– Protects and soothes the skin
  3. Panthenol– Acts as a humectant

My experience

Texture-shot-of-tiam-snail-and-azulene-low-ph-cleanser

Now to the “meat of the matter”. I have enjoyed using this cleanser! My sister and now my mum are hooked on it as a result, and we have different skin types so that is a testament to its properties. The Tiam snail and azulene low pH cleanser has a pH of 5.5 so it doesn’t disrupt your face’s pH as much which is a good property for any cleanser.

I also like that it has its directions in English at the back of the tube. After cleansing, there was no tightness or irritation noticed and I found this blogger who shares the same experience even from the previous version of the cleanser. On two occasions, it stung my eyes, but I’ve just been making sure I don’t open my eyes when I use it.

How I used it

This cleanser was my morning and evening cleanser for a while before I got the Frudia cleanser I would review next. Now it’s my nighttime cleanser. I apply it to my wet face and massage it outwards before rinsing. After that, I carry on with the rest of my routine.

Blogger-Iruoma-2-k-beauty-cleansers

Pros

  • Gentle on the skin
  • Good for sensitive skin because of its low pH
  • Really affordable- 200ml for 4500-6000 naira depending on the vendor.
  • Improves the overall appearance of the skin thanks to its ingredients.

Cons

I can’t fault this product but if I had to give any con it would be how easily the cap moves which can be messy if not sealed properly.

Where to Shop

I got on Beauty by Daz for 4,950 naira,  but you can get it from any of the stores here

https://www.beautybydaz.com/shop/face/cleanser/tiam-snail-and-azulene-low-ph-cleanser/

Pro Tips for cleansing:

  1. Always wash your hands first before cleansing.
  2. Extend the cleanser to your neck.
  3. Apply your cleanser in circular motions and outwards as that helps massage the skin and circulates blood flow.

The Frudia Citrus Brightening Micro Cleansing Foam Review

Iruoma-holding-the-Frudia-Citrus-Micro-cleansing-foam-cleanser

Description

Frudia is another k-beauty brand I didn’t know about till I started looking for another cleanser to add to my stash. They have a wide range of variants and use fruits as a distinguishing mark. In this case, mine is citrus.

I love their characteristic bright packaging. This cleanser comes in a bright yellow 145ml pack similar to TIAM’s snail cleanser- just the color difference.

The cleanser has a white look and is creamy in texture. The pack says it contains microbeads so that’s worth knowing. It also has a citrusy fragrance.

claims/ ingredients

The Frudia cleanser claims to be brightening as it contains Jeju citrus peel, naturally occurring vitamin C, and a combination of fruit oils like mango, apricot, grape, and grapefruit. It’s also said to be brightening and refreshing.

The ingredients are listed below:

Water, Myristic Acid, Glycerin, Potassium Hydroxide, Palmitic Acid, Stearic Acid, Lauric Acid, Glycol Distearate, Sorbitan Olivate, PEG-32, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Polyquaternium-39, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract, Oleic Acid, Arachidonic Acid, Disodium EDTA, Capric Acid, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Pearl Extract, Solanum Lycopersium (Tomota) Seed oil, Punica Granatum Seed Oil, MangiferaIndica (Mango) Seed Oil, Citrus Paradisi ( Grapefruit) Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Extract, Chamaecyparis Obtusa Leaf Extract, Bambusa Vulgaris Extract, Tocopherol, Phenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Phenoyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance, Limonene, Linalool, Hexyl Cinnamal

My experience

Creamy-texture-of-frudia-citrus-microcleansing-foam-cleanser

I wasn’t expecting that texture! It is so creamy and I thought it was a moisturizer I bought, lol. After noticing that it lathers well, I started using a dime-sized amount. The fragrance is my favorite thing about this cleanser as it smells like oranges.

On the first day I used it, it felt dry. Although I attributed that to the quantity and adjusted it in subsequent uses. So far, it still pales in comparison to the TIAM one in terms of how non-stripping the latter is.

One thing I noticed is that it leaves my skin “feeling” clean and looking for moisture. I’ve also been using it almost daily as part of my morning routine but sometimes I alternate between the TIAM one because of that “drying” feel this gives me.

How I used it

This cleanser is relegated to my morning routine as I focus on hydrating my skin during the day. That’s how I’ve been able to use the cleanser.

Ingredients-list-of-Frudia's-citrus-microcleansing-foam-cleanser

Pros

  • Has good cleaning properties
  • Pretty affordable- 145ml for less than 5000 naira on most sites.

Cons

  • Can be drying
  • It may not be suitable for daily use depending on your skin type
  • It may not be suitable for sensitive skin because of the microbeads

Where to Shop

I got mine on BeautybyDaz as well for 4500 naira.

Verdict

These k-beauty cleansers are worth trying but from my experience, I would definitely be repurchasing the TIAM one but not this FRUDIA variant.

FAQs contains bonus tips for you, my skincare bestie!

Cleansing Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. What does a cleanser do?

A cleanser or face wash is the first item in a skincare routine that basically rids your skin of dirt and impurities from exposure.

  1. How often should I use it?

Ideally twice a day. Morning and night. Some estheticians and beauty influencers say once for sensitive skin but I’m yet to be part of that camp.

  1. What type should I get?

There are different types of cleansers I would delve into in detail in another blog post. Cleansers come in different forms, but the one you should get is based on your skin concerns or skin type as well as the ingredients. This reel by one of my favorite skin influencers explains the different cleansers for skin types.

Some brands put out the skin type that their cleanser is suited for like Cerave’s line of cleansers, while some others like Simple kind-to-skin cleansers are generally suited for all skin types.

Have you tried any of these cleansers? Do you have a favorite cleanser currently?

My Current Full Body Skincare Routine ft St Ives, Dove, and more

Can we talk about how much effort we put into our face skincare routine and forget that of our body? Granted, a body skincare routine sounds like more work, but the skin below your neck is not immune to dullness and other skin concerns.

Skincare for the face is usually the first thing that pops up in our minds when we think of skincare. My journey with being intentional about my body skincare led me to create a stress-free routine because this body needs to glow too, okay? Plus what shall it profit you to have a glowy healthy face and dry neglected body skin?

Let’s get into my current body care routine and hopefully you’re inspired to take yours seriously too.

My Simple Body Skincare Routine

Cleanse

This is similar to your face skincare routine and is very crucial. You do not want to work on a dirty canvas. Good body care begins from the shower.

I use the St Ives Oat meal & shea butter body wash, and it’s been enjoyable.

St-Ives-Oatmeal-and-Shea-butter in blogger Iruoma’s body routine
I got this at a local supermarket.

While it is tempting to go for the cheapest bar soap since it’s just the “body”, please look out for moisturizing soaps/ washes.

Ingredients like ceramides, olive, shea butter, etc, are some of the stuff to look out for in your body wash according to  a board-certified dermatologist and author Debra Jaliman.

Watch out for ingredients like alcohol as they dry out the skin and remember you don’t want to dry out your body skin.

While I would always be the girl to buy body washes for their smell, I’m learning to look for those that can help solve body issues. I battle with back-acne and body washes containing ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, would be a good fit.  If you’re dry skin, then look out for words like “hydrating” on the body cleanser.

Ps- Feel free to use bar soaps like the ones from Dove for instance. I’m writing this as someone who is currently using a liquid body cleanser, so that’s not the only option

Exfoliate

This is one step that has changed how my body skin feels and looks lately.

Our body skin can tolerate exfoliation a bit more than the facial skin because it’s tougher. You still have to be wary of over-doing it anyways so as to not damage the outermost layer of your skin hence, exfoliate moderately.

You have two options for exfoliating your body- using a tool or scrubs.

Exfoliating gloves

I use a tool which is the exfoliating gloves. My exfoliation is 1-2 times a week and also don’t apply a lot of friction. After doing so, my body feels softer and it helps give a smooth appearance.

If you prefer a scrub, massage it gently on your body and focus on problem areas like the heels, knees and elbows that tend to look rougher than the rest of your skin.

NB- Exfoliating means sloughing off dead skin. This helps your skin feel soft and maintains your skin barrier.

Moisturize

The next step in my body routine is to moisturize. This is where you use body lotion. For as long as I can remember, my mum consciously instilled moisturizing our bodies as a habit for my siblings and me.

The difference now is I’m learning to not just moisturize, but to do it better. For my body lotions, I tend to go for hydrating or moisturizing tags.

Currently, the dove body glow lotion is my body moisturizer. A tip I learned from Tiktok is to apply the lotion on damp skin.

Dove-nourishing-secrets-glowing-ritual-body-lotion
My Current Body Lotion– I got this from a local supermarket as well.

Why? Because moisturizing immediately after a shower helps lock in some of the moisture on the skin thus keeping your body feeling hydrated. Apply the lotion over your whole body from below your neck to your toes and wait for a while to let it absorb before putting on your clothes.

Seal

After moisturizing, I like to seal it with body butter or body oil. Feel free to use the og Vaseline.

When I was younger, I used olive oil as my body “cream” for a long time. From about 14 years to my 2nd year in med school. I remember vividly because it was the only thing that didn’t irritate my skin after I had chicken pox.

Thankfully my mom let me explore it so far as I wasn’t looking “ashy”. That was how I discovered that body oils were a thing.

Currently, my sealant is a DIY body butter from Torera George, which helps me seal in the moisture from my body lotion. If I’m rushing somewhere and can’t apply the butter on my whole body, I use the R&R luxury body butter balm especially on my feet and elbows.

DIY-body-butter-texture
Texture shot of the DIY body butter I made.

Skincare should be flexible, so don’t beat yourself up.

When the weather is hot, I just use the lotion and move about my day. Other than that, using a body butter or body oil after the lotion gives an extra layer of glow and protection your body needs.

Fragrance

My body routine is not complete without smelling good. While my perfumes change and I’m not crazy about names, so far as they smell great, a deodorant is non-negotiable!

Currently, I’ve been enjoying the Dove go fresh orange variant. This deodorant spray keeps my underarms dry and I can still smell it by evening long after spraying it.

It’s worth the hype.

Dove-go-fresh-deodorant-in-body-care-routine

Body Spf

Last but not the least is applying SPF on exposed parts of my body. It’s tempting to think that SPF is only for the face. Plus the cost of sunscreen can be discouraging.

One thing I do is convert the mineral sunscreen that leaves a white cast on my face to a body SPF. You just have to blend a bit more.

If I’m wearing shorts, I focus on the exposed part of my legs and even my feet. Don’t forget the hands too.

When at home, I don’t bother applying SPF on my body, until I need to leave the house. This is one way to prevent the different shades of skin you may notice on exposed parts of your body if you’re constantly out.

Summary of my routine

Cleanse ~ Exfoliate (1-2 times a week) ~ Moisturize ~ Seal ~ SPF

Extra Body Care Tips

  1. Please don’t walk barefooted except you have rugs covering your floor. If you don’t like the feel of slippers, I recommend comfortable cotton socks to protect your feet.
  2. Skip the scorching water.

Make sure that your shower water is cold or lukewarm- not hot. This one’s hard especially in cold seasons, but hot water can be damaging to your skin. Some of the benefits of using cold water on your skin are:

  • It improves retention of your natural oils to avoid drying out of your skin.
  • It tightens your pores so your skin feels firmer.

Review- Simple Hydrating Light Moisturizer vs Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer

If you’re looking for an affordable and effective moisturizer, chances are that you’ve seen the Simple hydrating light moisturizer or the Simple replenishing moisturizer. Simple is that “simple”, clean, and effective brand that goes straight to the point. Their kind to skin cleanser was the first product I used from their brand and it’s usually one of the first cleansers I recommend to my friends if they are just starting their skincare journey.

For a long time, the simple hydrating light moisturizer was my staple moisturizer until I decided to try another brand. Recently I saw the replenishing moisturizer and decided to try it out and take note of the differences. If you’re wondering which simple moisturizer to try, then this review of both moisturizers is the post for you!

PS: Simple has 3 variants of their moisturisers. Light which is preferred for normal to oily skin. Rich for dry skin and the protecting light moisturiser which has SPF.

Simple Hydrating Light Moisturiser Review

simple-hydrating-light-moisturizer-review
The-back-of-simple-hydrating-light-moisturizer

Description

The moisturizer comes in a white opaque plastic bottle with a screw-on flip-flop cap. Like most simple products, the packaging is simple. The moisturizer has a cream-like consistency and is white in color. There’s also no fragrance. It is 125ml and lasts for a while.

claims/ ingredients

This brand has some tried and tested claims:

  • Hypoallergenic (not likely to trigger an allergy)
  • No parabens ( no synthetic chemicals/preservatives)
  • No ingredients derived from animals
  • No alcohol
  • No artificial color
  • Also dermatologically tested.

It contains humectants like glycerin, emollients like panthenol, and occlusives like dimethicone.

The ingredients as seen on the Simple UK are:

Aqua, Glycerin, Paraffinum Liquidum, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Cetyl Palmitate, Dimethicone, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Bisabolol, Borago Officinalis Seed Oil, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Cetyl Alcohol, Disodium EDTA, Lactic Acid, Panthenol, Pantolactone, Pentylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Carbonate, Potassium Hydroxide, Serine, Sodium Lactate, Sorbitol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Urea.

NB- A good moisturiser should basically contain *HOE which I coined to remember the following:

  • Humectants: draws water from the environment to the skin.
  • Occlusive: forms a thin layer to seal in moisture.
  • Emollients: binds the skin cells together to give a smoother texture.

My experience With The Simple Hydrating Light Moisturizer

I used this product after my toner and I loved the hydrating feeling upon application. I don’t like my moisturizers feeling heavy on my skin. As I mentioned earlier, this is the moisturizer I keep coming back to, as I experiment more with my cleansers and SPF.

I’ve been using it mostly during the day and using the Face Facts hyaluronic face cream at night.

The cap made it easy to dispense and apply to my face and I typically only need a dime-sized amount to cover both my face and neck on a sunny day. It’s also light enough to add an extra layer when the weather is dry.

Texture-shot-of-the-simple-hydrating-light-moisturizer
Texture shot of the Simple hydrating light moisturizer

It didn’t irritate my skin or cause me to break out which is a plus. This moisturizer always feels soothing and cool on my skin upon application. I also noticed that my skin would feel supple till evening, especially during a humid day and that covers one of its claims to keep the skin moisturized. I can’t vouch for the 12 hours claim anyways.

Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer

simple-replenishing-rich-moisturizer-review
The-back-of-simple-hydrating-light-moisturizer

Description

If you’re not conscious of their names, you may think that the replenishing moisturizer is the same as the light moisturizer because they look exactly alike. It also comes in a white opaque plastic bottle with the same screw-on flip-flop cap that makes for easy application.

The bottle has a quantity of 125ml as well so it lasts for a while too. Texture wise it has the same creamy consistency as the hydrating moisturizer, but is a bit thicker and has no fragrance.

claims/ ingredients

This moisturizer also has the same claims as the hydrating moisturizer. The replenishing moisturizer has a slightly different composition as it contains pro-Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E.

The list of ingredients is seen as follows:

Aqua, Glycerin, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Polyglyceryl-3 Methylglucose Distearate, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Stearyl Alcohol, Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Polyacrylamide, Phenoxyethanol, Stearic Acid, Panthenol, Caprylyl Glycol, C13-14Isoparaffin,Bisabolol, Laureth-7,DisodiumEDTA, SodiumHydroxide, Pantolactone, TocopherylAcetate, BHT,PentyleneGlycol, Urea, Lactic Acid, SodiumLactate, Serine, Sorbitol, SodiumChloride, Allantoin.

My Experience With The Simple Replenishing Rich Moisturizer

I tried this for just a month and I have mixed feelings about it. I’m trying to be conscious about the effect weather has on my skin and its response to certain products so I want to give this one some grace.

It was thicker in consistency than the light moisturizer and doesn’t feel as soothing as the hydrating moisturizer on my skin. It felt like I was applying a thick lotion to my face. To be fair, I like lightweight moisturizers so that played a huge role in how I felt about the simple replenishing rich moisturizer.

Texture-shot-of-the-simple-replenishing-rich-moisturizer
Texture shot of the Simple replenishing rich moisturizers

One way I enjoyed using it was at night before I switched to my current nighttime moisturizer after doing some experimenting during night and day to gauge how my skin felt. This moisturizer is also non-greasy like the hydrating moisturizer and didn’t cause me to break out as well.

Hydrating vs Replenishing verdict: Which Is Best For You?

From my experience, I will say that the hydrating light moisturizer is best suited for normal and oily skin types while the replenishing rich moisturizer is best suited for dry skin especially with its ingredients, although this blogger disagrees based on her experience.

Thankfully, both of these moisturizers are suited for sensitive skin and if you’re new to skincare, you can try them once you know your skin type.

RELATED- HOW TO KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

If you’re looking for something with actives, then these moisturizers won’t cut it for you because they’re really simple! The ingredient list shows lactic acid but the products don’t exfoliate or do much after moisturizing the skin.

I personally prefer the hydrating and always repurchase, especially for the months when I’m broke as it’s super affordable.

Where to buy

I wasn’t angry here, just super focused on the camera and forgot to smile, lol!

I got both from @beautybydaz on Instagram for about #2500 ($5-$7), but prices vary slightly depending on the store.

You can get it on Amazon below;

Pros of Both Moisturizers

  • Travel-friendly
  • Good quantity
  • Affordable
  • Great for sensitive skin

Cons of Both Moisturizers

  • The opaque bottle doesn’t let you see the quantity of product left

Bonus tips-FAQs

  • How do you use a moisturizer?

Depending on the texture and even weather, you can apply once or layer it (apply twice) during your routine.

  • When should you use a moisturizer?

Use after toning or cleansing if you don’t have a toner. Also, a moisturizer comes before sunscreen in the morning and is the last step in your night routine.

  • How often should you use a moisturizer?

Twice- in your morning and evening routine.

  • Can oily skin skip a moisturizer?

No! Please don’t skip a moisturizer if you’re oily skin. Oily skin needs moisture just like every other type of skin and not applying moisturizer causes your skin to produce more sebum and prone to more breakouts.

If you got to the end of this post, I am proud of you! Have you tried any of these products before? Would you like to try them? Let me know in the comments.

August Skincare Empties Ft Face Facts Serum and Beauty of Joseon Essence Water

I’m usually dramatic when I notice my favorite products are about to finish. August is over and there were some skincare products I exhausted. I’ve been itching to tell you my thoughts about the August skincare empties.

PS- Skincare empties is a series of short honest reviews of products that I exhaust during a particular month. I share my experience with a product and give a verdict. This post also contains an affiliate link to support the blog at no cost to you.

Face facts hyaluronic hydrating facial serum

Description

Skincare can get expensive but you don’t have to break the bank always to get an effective product. That’s my stance on the Face facts brand. My close friends and siblings hear me talk about this brand often because I think it’s highly underrated. I’ve also recommended their products to my sister and her friend and they have positive reviews about them!

Their hydrating day cream was a good purchase and I shared the review here. After that, I decided to check out their hyaluronic acid range by getting the moisturizer and serum to see how my skin reacts to them.  The face facts hyaluronic serum comes in a 30ml glass bottle with a wide dropper. It has a watery consistency that is applied easily.

Ingredients and Claims

The hyaluronic hydrating facial serum claims to “temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles” while delivering a healthy glow.

The star ingredients are Sodium hyaluronate and Glycerin which hydrates and increase moisture.

Other ingredients are; Aqua, DMDM Hydantoin, Polyacrylic Acid, Triethanolamine, Betaine, Parfum, Disodium EDTA, and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil.

ingredients-list-of-the-face-facts-hyaluronic-facial-serum
Ingredients list

Experience

I believe it lived up to its claims of being moisturizing. One thing I loved about using this product was the easy application and absorption. I used my first bottle morning and night before switching ut tonight only.

It’s also easy to layer other products like my moisturizer and SPF without it feeling sticky. I also didn’t have any experience with irritation. It also leaves my skin feeling plump. My only criticism is that the 30 ml feels so small.

How to use-

  • Use this serum after cleansing and toning. I would usually follow after my toner, but there were days when I used the Beauty of Joseon ginseng essence water before applying and then finishing up my routine.
  • You can use both day and night or anytime you prefer.

Pro tip- For clean girl makeup, apply this serum and SPF before your makeup routine. It gives the “glow”!

texture-shot-of-the-face-facts-hyaluronic-facial-serum

Who can use

It’s gentle enough to be used by all skin types. Also, if you have dry skin and looking for something affordable to add to your routine then it’s worth a shot.

Verdict

I’m currently on my second bottle because not only is it affordable, it’s been good for my skin so I give it an 8.5/10.

The Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water

a-bottle-of-the-beauty-of-joseon-ginseng-essence-water

Description & Experience

This essence water and the k-beauty product are now under one of the holy grail products I have fallen in love with. Imagine an elixir of good ingredients! That’s the BOJ essence water. My skin would go from dull to glowy after application.

I’m sad that it’s exhausted and I won’t be able to get it for now. If I eventually get it again I would update you.

The Beauty of Joseon ginseng essence water comes in a simple plastic bottle and looks like “iced tea”. I share a detailed review on how to use it, its benefits, and its ingredients in another post because it was that good!

texture-shot-of-the-boj-ginseng-essence-water

Who can use

Gentle enough to be used by anyone. If you’re particularly after your dull skin, then try it.

Verdict

A solid 9/10! I’m hesitant to type this because it’s based on my experience but really, it’s worth a shot.

That is all for my August skincare empties! I hope you check them out for yourself too.

Have you tried any of these skincare products?

Monthly Favourites for August 2022- Little Moments & Things That Sparked Joy

Some of my favorite things to share are highlights from the week or month. That’s how the monthly favorites posts were born on the blog. It makes me look back on some of the little things that have happened in my life and share them with you so you can be inspired to enjoy your moments too.

How is it September already?

Happy new month!

Here are 5 favorites things I enjoyed in August;

Blog Wins

August was the month I got a lot of feedback on the blog. Do you know what I find funny? I had looked forward to replying more human comments and seeing my blog posts rank higher on google, but I didn’t know how happy I would be when these moments finally arrived.

This past month, a few people also shared their skincare journey that was influenced by me. It may not be a big deal to others but knowing that someone trusts my words enough to spend their money on the products I recommend means so much to me.

It’s tempting to hide your work from others, but you’ll be robbing them of the good work God has given you the grace to do. Please share what you do with others.

A picture collage of WhatsApp messages to Iruoma with positive feedback on the blog

Coming back on Twitter

Social media and I are in a love-hate relationship. I love the impact you can have, the bridges you can set up, and even the experiences you get by interacting with people all over the world.

That said, social media sometimes overwhelms me. If there was any app I would point to that topped the list of apps that stressed me, it was Twitter.

Coming back on Twitter was one of my month’s favorites because I was going in “afraid”. I’m less anxious now that I have some clarity on what I want to share there, but it’s one step at a time so it deserves a special mention.

Find me here and let me know you’re from the blog!

Skin

It’s safe to say that skin would be a constant factor in these posts because I can’t help it.

I’ve noticed my facial skin breaks out a week or two before my period and now I’m less agitated anytime I see those pimples. Perfect skin is an illusion, but healthy skin is the goal!

I’m now left with some dark spots where the breakouts were and while that is annoying, I have to wait till I can afford products targeted at hyperpigmentation. Some of my products ran out and I already have some replacements to try out so currently, your girl is broke!

PS- I've tried the good molecules discolouration correcting serum and eyeing their toner, but let me know in the comments if you have tried any products targeted at dark spots!

Watched

There was some normalcy this past month as I resumed watching movies. All is well with the world again, lol. I barely saw a movie last month due to the deadlines of my writing internship but things are a bit calmer now and I’m back to relaxing with Netflix.

I saw Purple heartsLook Both Ways,  Day Shift, Persuasion, and Lockdown. It’s hard to pick the best between Lockdown and Day Shift

Day Shift was hilarious and action-filled. It shows how much a man is willing to fight for the ones he loves (how much more God). The main character is a vampire slayer and before you roll your eyes at yet another vampire movie, this one had some good vibes. Imagine classifying vampires and knowing their age based on their fangs or having a whole union assigned to fighting vampires. It was a cool take on an over-flogged theme that and I enjoyed it.

Lockdown is a Nollywood movie that made me proud. I had some issues with the way the doctor relayed important information, but other than that, they did a good job of paying attention to details! I laughed so much that balanced the serious themes the movie shared.

This is turning into movie reviews so I’ll end by saying these movies made me happy and I recommend them for a good laugh and stress relief!

For sexuality: Does God forgive sexual sin? by Verity & What we wish we knew about sex by Thirty Minutes With the Perrys.

Anything that involves Christians talking about biblical sexuality, count me in! I love the candid discussions lately in Christian communities and I can’t wait for more people to be unashamed in talking about these real topics.

For Bible study: Building a sustainable bible routine by Verity was what I needed on the day I listened. She talked about how different seasons of our lives can impact our study of the Bible , the origin of “quiet time” and what intimacy with God looks like.

As usual, I won’t tell you that August was perfect because there were moments I hated. Overall it was a good month and that’s because I got to see some of the things I’ve been praying for happening. I look forward to the rest of the year and more highlights.

A (Detailed) Review Of The Beauty Of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water

Meeting the Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Essence Water

The first time I came across the Beauty of Joseon ginseng essence water was on Titktok. A Nigerian skincare influencer was using it in her morning routine while her husband did the voiceover. Asides from the fact that it was cute, the way he described it as looking like iced tea caught my attention and it was hilarious.

I made a mental note to try the essence water someday and being a k-beauty product was another plus. Fast forward to June. I saw this product while restocking my skincare products and decided to try it.

The Beauty of Joseon (BOJ) is an astounding k-beauty brand and they’re well known for their Dynasty cream and infusion of hanbang (traditional and herbal) beauty methods. Was their essence water a hit or miss? Let’s find out!

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase through a link, at no cost to you. This supports me and keeps my blog running.

Texture & Appearance

The beauty of Joseon ginseng essence water comes in a transparent slender plastic bottle which is very simple. It has a consistency that is between a serum and toner- lighter than a serum, but a little thicker than a toner.

It is fragrance-free and the ginseng smell s very subtle. According to Soko glam, it is acidic with a pH of 5.84.

One thing about this essence is that it was formulated without artificial colors, alcohol, and artificial fragrances so sensitive skin can enjoy it as well.  It also comes in 2 sizes- 40 ml and 150 ml. I got the 40 ml and now I’m pained it’s exhausted already.

The bottle has a pinhole applicator which makes pouring the content easy to do.

PS- An essence is the “love child” of a toner and serum like beautywithin put it. It usually has a watery consistency and is lightweight. It’s best for extra hydration.
Pinhole-applicator-of-the-BOJ-ginseng-essence-water-bottle

Ingredients and claims

This essence water contains mostly cultivated ginseng root water (80%) and niacinamide (2%).

When researching for this post, I found out that the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea (MFDS) fined BOJ over the claims of their ginseng quality. They use cultivated ginseng which is less expensive and subsequently has fewer benefits.

Does that mean it has no benefits? Nope! This info is to make you see all the aspects of the product so you know what you’re getting.

Other than that controversy, the BOJ essence water packs up a lot of great ingredients that make it worth anyone’s shot!

Here are some of them and their functions:

  1. Ginseng– is anti-inflammatory, and stimulates collagen production which improves the appearance of wrinkles.
  2. Niacinamide- this is one of my favorite ingredients. It helps the skin barrier, improves skin texture, and is great for oil control.
  3. Glycerin- helps in moisturizing.
  4. Hyaluronic acid– for hydrating
  5. Adenosine- anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle properties. It also makes the skin look plump.
  6. Licorice– this helps reduce redness and soothes the skin.

That’s how packed this product is! The rest of the ingredients as seen on Soko glam are:

Panax ginseng root water, Butylene glycol, Glycerin, Propandeiol, Niacinamide, 1,2-Heaxanediol, water, Hydroxyacetophenone, Glyceryl glucoside, Panthenol, Xanthan gum, Allantoin, Dipotassium glycyrrhizate, Adenosine, Panax ginseng callus culture extract, Dextrin, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) extract, Disodium EDTA, Glucose, Panax Ginseng Berry Extract, Panax Ginseng Root Extract, Lactobacillus/ Panax Ginseng root ferment filtrate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium hyaluronate

My experience

A video showing how I use the BOJ essence water *I do not own the rights to the audio used here*

This product was a game changer in my routine and it was love at first touch!  I applied it immediately after my cleanser and before applying serum in my morning routine.

I love that it absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel tacky or heavy. Anytime I would apply it, it would give instant plumpness and hydration to my skin. I loved the smell because it felt like I was having a mini spa session. It also helped with an instant glow and was soothing to use. The instant glow of skin after use was something I always looked forward to!

Like I always say, consistency is another skincare ingredient. While this product gives an instant hydration and plumpness due to its ingredients, the best benefits are gotten with a consistent use.

How to use

  • After cleansing your face,
  • Apply a few drops to your palms and gently pat them on your face.
  • I usually would use my serum after this, but feel free to continue the rest of your routine after.

Who needs it

One thing I love about this essence water is that it is suitable for all skin types. It’s particularly good if you want to target inflammation, help with your skin barrier, and have deeper hydration.

Pros

  1. Lightweight
  2. Easy to apply
  3. Travel friendly
  4. Can make your routine minimal
  5. Can be used all year round due to its texture

Cons

  1. Not suitable for those sensitive to ginseng extract

Verdict

The Beauty of Joseon essence water is definitely worth your buy despite the controversies about the quality of their ginseng root. I would give it a 10 /10 because it was that good for my skin and is suitable for all skin types. I would repurchase.

I Tried The Cerave Foaming Cleanser On Oily Skin- My Honest Review.

Pinterest image of cerave foaming cleanser
Save this on Pinterest so more people can see

As someone with oily acne-prone skin, getting a gentle yet effective cleanser is always on the top of my list. The Cerave foaming cleanser was the second cleanser I tried from Cerave after their smoothing cleanser and it was part of my July skincare empties. Considering the reviews I read about it, it didn’t leave me disappointed one bit!

I wanted a separate post to really break it all down for you so here goes:

*This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission if you make a purchase through a link, at no cost to you. This supports me and keeps my blog running.

Meeting The Cerave Foaming Cleanser

This cleanser, just like most of Cerave’s products comes in a simple and practical bottle. It has 2 variants- the 236ml and 473ml sizes. Mine was 236 ml. The bottle has a dispenser which makes it easy to use. It doesn’t have the most aesthetic appearance but it’s the classic representation of don’t judge a book by its cover.

Ps- A cleanser is usually the first step in your skincare routine

Texture

It has a gel-like consistency and texture that lathers well but doesn’t dry your skin. The gel texture has a balanced feel as it is neither too thick nor too watery.

Ingredients & Claims

Cerave-Facial-Foaming-Cleanser-ingredient

In order to get the most updated ingredients Cerave recommends you refer to the ingredient list on the product itself, but I got a list from their site for an overview.

Aqua / Water / Eau, Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, Glycerin, Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, PEG-150 Pentaerythrityl Tetrastearate, Niacinamide, PEG-6 Caprylic/ Capric glycerides, Sodium methyl cocoyl taurate, Propylene glycol, Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Carbomer, Methylparaben, Sodium chloride, Sodium lauroyl, Lactylate, Cholesterol, Disodium EDTA, Propylparaben, Citric acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid, Phytosphingosine, Xanthan gum.

Like most of their products, this cleanser is alcohol, fragrance, and essential oil free. In other words, it’s great for sensitive skin.

According to Cerave; the cerave foaming facial cleanser contains hyaluronic acid (a great humectant), niacinamide(anti-inflammatory, soothing), and ceramides which help maintain the skin’s barrier and seal in moisture. It also removes excess sebum and deeply cleanses the skin without compromising your skin barrier.

It also contains surfactants which are the ingredients that enable water and oil to mix so dirt on the skin can be washed off easily.

I also found out that sodium cocoyl glycinate and coco-betaine cause the lather of this product and in effect don’t dry out the skin. These highlighted ingredients, according to a dermatologist, distinguishes it from most cleansers.

My experience

I couldn’t get used to the gentle feel of the cleanser on my face. It was my sole cleanser for over 5 weeks and I liked how it didn’t have a squeaky feeling after use.

I used both day and night as well and I loved how refreshed my face always felt after cleaning.

Who needs it

If you have normal to oily skin then this cleanser is a good choice. It also works well for sensitive skin. Dry-skinned beauties can give it a shot as Ebun a lifestyle blogger did and you just might love it too!

Pros

  1. You only need a dime-sized amount
  2. Lasts for a long time and is affordable
  3. Easily available as most beauty stores stock it
  4. Protects the skin barrier due to its ingredients
  5. Doesn’t strip the skin as it is hydrating
  6. Can be used both in the morning and at night as it is gentle enough

Cons

It’s hard to find any cons for this product because it is worth the hype. Other than that:

  1. If you’re sensitive to niacinamide, then it may not be a great fit.
  2. It’s also not travel-friendly because of its size, but it can be worked around.

Verdict

It’s safe to say you know where I stand with this cleanser. My skin loved it and I think it’s worth trying. I’ll give it a 9/10!

Monthly Favorites for July 2022- Taking stock and Finding Joy In The Mundane

It’s been over a week into August and I would not even give the excuse of being too busy to upload this post because I ignored the reminders.

Happy new month, lovelies!

I started sharing monthly favorites (apart from skincare) last month on the blog and received such amazing feedback. My goal is to spur you to take note of the seemingly mundane things around you that you actually enjoy.

I also share weekly favorites and inspirational newsletters so join us by signing up below;

[mc4wp_form id=”265″]

In the spirit of sharing more, here are July’s favorites:

Celebrations

July is my birth month! I clocked the “scary” 25 and while it was my third birthday at home on another strike action, I would say it was one of my best. I shared all the details from what happened on the day to the areas I’ve grown in.

Writing More

I started a writing internship at the beginning of July. Ladies (and gentlemen), when I tell you I have never written as much in such little time as I did last month, I’m not kidding. As I write this, it is the last week.

I loved that I have learned more about the tone of my writing, how to get past imposter syndrome, writing with others, and meeting new people who love to write! There was a week I almost quit, but the encouragement from some friends reminded me of why I started in the first place. It’s definitely one highlight from July!

Skin

You know that skincare had to come in, haha!

Me enjoying how my skin looked last month

One thing I enjoyed about my skin last month was learning more about hydration and seeing the effect. If you’re stuck on how to improve your skin barrier, then one way is by introducing hydrating products.

Let me know if you would like a blog post on that in the comments.

PS– The skin barrier is what makes up the outermost layer of the skin. It acts as a protective shield from irritation and environmental stressors that make us prone to dehydration, inflammation, etc. Basically, a good skin barrier equals healthy-looking skin.

Watched

Would you believe me if I told you I only watched movies last month one or two times? It’s crazy because movies are my treasured passe-temps. I didn’t know I could focus so much on writing that I would forget to see a movie. Considering I have to pick, it would be the Man from Toronto. It was a really good watch and just hilarious.

Looking back, July was not bad at all. I don’t want to use only the good moments as a yardstick, but I believe it’s one way to go through the moments and just take stock of the good things around.

6 Easy Ways To Care for Natural Hair- A Naturalista’s Guide.

My friend Uloma is a natural hair enthusiast and YouTuber. I’ve always admired this babe’s journey into the natural hair space and her growth so far.

That’s the reason I reached out for her to write some easy ways we could care for natural hair because she does so effortlessly. Whether you’re a newbie, pro, or even just transitioning, she has a tip for all of us so sit tight and enjoy!

Beauty is what you make standard. Ranging from your skin, hair, and nails to what is within.

All hair types are beautiful, but for you black, brown beautiful goddess, what grows out from your scalp is your crown.

You can alter the natural state of your hair, but while you wear those bouncy kinky coils like a crown, here are some ways to maintain and care for it. It’s pretty high maintenance, but not difficult.

🌻” Health” over “Length”

Honey, the sooner you understand this, the more your hair will flourish.

Adequate hydration, exercise, positive thinking, hair hygiene, iron, and folic acid supplements, fruits, and vegetables are some of the ways to improve the health of your hair, skin, and nails without blowing your account.

Just give tender loving care to your body.

🌻Protective styling

Starting from here makes a lot of sense because this is where most naturalistas lose and break off their hair. Your protective styling should be tension free, protect your ends, and be kept for one-month minimum. One month so that you can appreciate the undergrowth.

🌻Caring for your hair while in a protective style

It doesn’t just end at making cornrows or braids and then abandoning your hair and scalp. While in the style, you should oil your scalp, and moisturize your hair and its ends before sealing with butter or heavy oil. It’s also advisable you wash your scalp bi-weekly while in that protective style. Clean scalp equals healthy hair growth!

🌻Protective style takes down

After keeping your hair for a month, it’s time to take it down. You can go longer than one month, but anything more than two months is recipe for disaster in my opinion.

The process of taking down your protective style determines whether you’ll retain the growth you just acquired from leaving your hair alone for a month.

Using products with massive slip is key. Cheap conditioners are to the rescue for this. Never take down your hair dry. Never!

Uloma shows how to detangle your natural hair properly to retain length.

While taking down your hair, you want to make sure to finger detangle first before going in with your detangling tool like a comb, brush, or whatever rocks your boat.

PRO TIP- always use your tool from the end to the root of your hair, and not vice versa.

🌻Wash day

Wash day is what comes after your protective style takedown. My advice is to eat well before you proceed with your wash day and be very patient and gentle. The same goes for your protective style takedown. The nitty-gritty of wash day will be shared in a future blog post because it is a full regimen.

🌻Prepping your hair for the next protective style.

I didn’t know the importance of this until recently. The whole point of preparing your hair for the next protective style is to keep it stretched and reduce breakage while manipulating it for the next protective style.

After your wash day, the best healthy method is to moisturize your hair and seal it with any hair butter. After that, you braid your hair in sections, preferably eight sections, and then leave your hair to dry in the braids. This may take 1-2days so no pressure. Please never leave your hair to dry in its natural state!

The point of all these steps and extra care is to retain length. Black hair grows if you care for it!

3 Skincare Empties For The Month Of July ft their reviews

Hey, beauty!

Why do good skincare products have to finish? You don’t know the sadness in my heart as  I look at these skincare products I just exhausted with the current inflation. Anyhoo, let’s get into the skincare empties for July!

PS- Skincare empties is a series of short reviews of products that I exhaust during a particular month. I share my experience with a product and give a verdict based on that.

Nivea nourishing  cocoa body lotion 48h deep moisture care

texture shot of the nivea cocoa butter body lotion

The Nivea cocoa body lotion is my first conscious lotion buy. I mentioned how I’m slowly transitioning to learning more about body care in the review for May’s empties, so this is an attempt to continue.

Description

The Nivea cocoa butter body lotion comes in a blue and brown 400ml bottle. It has a sealed blue lined cap with a hole that dispenses easily once you squeeze. This ensures the product is safe once the cap is sealed and that would be good for travel.

Experience

The cocoa smell is refreshing! It doesn’t overwhelm you, but it lingers on your skin. The lotion is white in color and I  like that it doesn’t have a heavy texture.  Despite the immediate moisturizing effect after a shower, it takes time to sink into my skin after a bath. Other than that, it has an easy application.

Who can use

The bottle specifically says for dry skin. My body skin is not dry, but I enjoyed using this product nonetheless.

Verdict

Worth your buy if you’re on the look for a big body lotion that is moisturizing and can be layered with fragrances.

The Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum

the good molecules discoloration correcting serum review

Good molecules is one brand I love! They have a decent range of products that are gentle on the skin and target skincare concerns like hyperpigmentation. I wanted to try out their serum to see if it lives up to the hype.

Description

It’s a 30ml regular-sized serum bottle that comes with a dropper. I love the packaging!

It has a tropical fragrance that smells fruity. The texture is thicker than an average serum, white in color and has a sticky feeling.

texture shot of the discoloration correcting serum

Experience

I used this day and night for the first week and decided that wasn’t wise for two reasons. First is that it’s just 30 mls. The next reason is because of the texture which I felt paired better with a PM routine.

I found this serum impressive as it evened out my skin tone after bout of acne left some dark spots. Going forward, if I repurchase I plan to be more conscious of the before and after so I can share better with you. One thing I also noticed is that, I had to use this product consistently.

Who can use

It is worth your buy! Hopefully, I repurchase because I didn’t use this product well in terms of recording my progress.

CERAVE FOAMING CLEANSER

Cerave Facial Foaming Cleanser review

Someone has to give it up for Cerave’s range of good products! Cerave has about seven cleansers for various concerns and skin types. While that is inclusive and very thoughtful of a brand, it could get confusing. The foaming cleanser is the second cleanser I’m trying from them and it didn’t leave me disappointed.

Description

It comes in a practical 236ml pump bottle with a dispenser that makes it easy to use the product. It has no particular smell as it’s fragrant-free. The consistency is gel-like and it is transparent.

Experience

This foaming cleanser felt so gentle on my skin and there was no “squeaky clean” feel which shows that it doesn’t strip my facial oils. It’s also gentle enough to be used both in the morning and at night.

Who can use

It does say for normal and oily skin, but don’t knock it off till you try.
