  • Skincare for African Climates: How to Build a Routine That Works for Your Skin

African skin deserves skincare that is suited to its environment. Across many parts of Africa, high temperatures, humidity, intense sunlight, dust, and changing weather conditions can affect our skin in different ways. These conditions may contribute to excess oil, dehydration, uneven skin tone, breakouts, sensitivity, and a weakened skin barrier.

However, a skincare routine that works in many African climates doesn’t mean using numerous products or following complicated trends. It means understanding how your environment affects your skin and choosing products that balance hydration, protection, and nourishment.

In this guide, we’ll explore how to build a practical skincare routine for African climates, including the key steps to follow, ingredients to consider, common mistakes to avoid, and how to adjust your routine according to your skin type and daily environment.

Why African Climates Require a Different Skincare Approach

There are unique challenges for maintaining healthy skin in African climes; high temperatures, humidity, intense sunlight, dust, and seasonal changes. For this reason, a skincare routine that works well in one environment may not always deliver the same result in another.

A good routine should therefore be simple, consistent, and suited to your skin type and environment. The goal is to keep your skin clean, hydrated, protected, and balanced without overwhelming it with unnecessary products.

However, having a skincare routine that works in an African climate does not mean using numerous products or following complicated trends.

How to Build a Skincare Routine for African Climates

A skincare routine should focus on the basic needs of your skin: cleansing, hydration, moisturizing, and sun protection. You do not need a long list of products to maintain healthy skin. What matters most is choosing suitable products and using them consistently.

Start by considering your skin type and the conditions you experience daily. Oily skin may need lightweight, non-comedogenic products, while dry skin may benefit from richer moisturizers that help prevent moisture loss. If your skin is sensitive, choose gentle, fragrance-free products and introduce new ingredients gradually.

Your routine should be flexible to change when your environment changes. Hot and humid weather may require lighter textures, while dry or dusty conditions may call for additional moisturization and barrier support. This approach helps your skin remain comfortable and balanced throughout the year.

Step 1: Cleanse Your Skin Gently

Cleansing removes sweat, excess oil, dust, sunscreen, and other impurities that can build up on the skin throughout the day. In hot and humid African climates, the skin may produce more sweat and oil, making gentle cleansing especially important.

Choose a cleanser that suits your skin type and avoid harsh products that leave your skin feeling tight or uncomfortable. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a gentle foaming cleanser may work well. If your skin is dry or sensitive, choose a mild, hydrating cleanser that helps preserve the skin barrier.

For most people, cleansing twice a day, in the morning and evening, is enough. If your skin becomes dry, irritated, or overly tight, reduce cleansing or choose a gentler formula.

Step 2: Keep Your Skin Hydrated

Hydration is essential for healthy skin, especially in environments where heat, humidity, or dry conditions can affect the skin’s moisture balance. Dehydrated skin can feel tight, look dull, or become more sensitive, even when it produces plenty of oil.

Daily sun protection is one of the most important parts of a skincare routine in African climates. Strong ultraviolet radiation can contribute to sunburn, premature skin ageing, uneven pigmentation, and worsening of existing dark spots.

Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and apply it to exposed areas of the skin every morning. Pay attention to areas that are often overlooked, including the ears, neck, hands, and chest. If you spend several hours outdoors, reapply your sunscreen according to the product instructions, particularly after sweating or washing your face.

People with darker skin tones still need sunscreen. Melanin provides some natural protection from ultraviolet radiation, but it does not completely prevent sun damage or hyperpigmentation. Consistent sun protection can also help prevent dark spots from becoming more noticeable.

Step 3: Protect Your Skin From the Sun

For hydration, ingredients such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid can help attract and retain moisture. Ceramides can support the skin barrier, while niacinamide may help with excess oil, uneven tone, and the appearance of enlarged pores. If you are dealing with dark spots or hyperpigmentation, ingredients such as azelaic acid and vitamin C may be useful when introduced appropriately.

Avoid introducing several active ingredients at the same time. Start with one new product, give your skin time to adjust, and pay attention to how your skin responds. A carefully selected routine is usually more sustainable than constantly changing products.

Step 4: Choose Ingredients That Support Your Skin

The ingredients you choose should address your skin’s specific needs rather than simply follow skincare trends. Look for products that provide hydration, strengthen the skin barrier, control excess oil, or improve uneven skin tone without causing unnecessary irritation.

Choose a hydrating product based on your skin type. Lightweight gels and water-based moisturisers can work well for oily skin, while creams with ingredients such as glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides can better support dry skin. A balanced routine should provide moisture without leaving your skin excessively greasy

Step 5: Avoid Common Skincare Mistakes

Some skincare habits can make skin problems worse, especially when the skin is exposed to heat, humidity, dust, and strong sunlight. One common mistake is using harsh soaps or cleansers that strip the skin of its natural oils. This can leave the skin dry, irritated, or more sensitive.

Another mistake is using too many active ingredients at once. Combining several exfoliating or treatment products without giving the skin time to adjust can cause irritation and weaken the skin barrier. Introduce new products gradually and give your skin time to respond.

It is also important not to skip sunscreen because you have dark skin. Melanin offers some natural protection from ultraviolet radiation, but it does not provide complete protection. Daily sunscreen use remains an important part of protecting your skin and managing hyperpigmentation.

Step 6: Adjust Your Routine to Your Skin Type

Your skin type should guide the products and textures you choose. Oily skin may benefit from lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturisers, while dry skin often needs richer products that help reduce moisture loss. Combination skin may require different levels of hydration across different areas of the face.

If you have sensitive skin, keep your routine simple and introduce new products gradually. Avoid adding several strong active ingredients at once, especially if your skin is already irritated.

Pay attention to how your skin responds over time. Changes in weather, stress, products, and daily activities can affect your skin, so your routine may need occasional adjustments

Step 7: Create a Simple Morning and Evening Routine

A consistent morning and evening routine can help you maintain healthy skin without using too many products. The morning routine should focus on cleansing, hydration, moisturising, and protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation.

In the evening, cleanse your skin to remove sunscreen, sweat, oil, dust, and other impurities from the day. Follow with any targeted treatment that suits your skin needs, then apply a moisturiser to support the skin barrier while you sleep.

Consistency matters more than having a large collection of skincare products. As your skin changes with the weather, lifestyle, or other factors, make small adjustments rather than replacing your entire routine.

It is also important not to skip sunscreen because you have dark skin.

Step 8: Pay Attention to Your Skin Barrier

Your skin barrier helps protect the skin from external irritants and helps prevent excessive moisture loss. Heat, dry weather, frequent cleansing, harsh products, and over-exfoliation can place stress on the skin barrier and leave the skin feeling dry, tight, irritated, or unusually sensitive.

Support your skin barrier by using a gentle cleanser, applying a suitable moisturiser, and avoiding unnecessary exfoliation. Ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, and other moisturising agents can help support comfortable, well-hydrated skin.

If your skin becomes persistently irritated after introducing a new product, stop using the product and simplify your routine. Give your skin time to recover before introducing additional active ingredients.

Step 9: Keep Your Routine Simple and Consistent

A skincare routine does not need to contain many products to be effective. Using too many products can make it difficult to identify what is helping or irritating your skin. A simple routine also makes it easier to stay consistent, especially when your schedule or environment changes.

Focus on the essentials first: a gentle cleanser, a suitable moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. You can add targeted treatments when you have a specific concern, such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or uneven skin tone.

Give your routine enough time to work before making frequent changes.

Step 10: Know When to Seek Professional Advice

Not every skin concern can be resolved with an over-the-counter skincare routine. Persistent acne, severe irritation, unexplained rashes, painful skin lesions, or sudden changes in your skin may require assessment by a qualified dermatologist or healthcare professional.

Avoid repeatedly changing products or using strong treatments to manage a problem that does not improve. Professional guidance can help identify the underlying cause and reduce the risk of prolonged irritation or scarring.

Your skincare routine should support healthy skin, but it should not replace professional care when you have a persistent or concerning skin problem.

Step 11: Build a Routine You Can Maintain

The best skincare routine is one that fits your skin, your environment, and your daily life. Start with the essentials, observe how your skin responds, and make gradual changes when necessary. With consistency and the right approach, you can build a routine that supports healthy-looking skin throughout the changing conditions of the African climate.

We live in a climate that requires practical, consistent and flexible skincare. Heat, humidity, intense sunlight, dust, and seasonal changes can all affect the skin, but these challenges can be managed with a routine built around gentle cleansing, adequate hydration, moisturisation, and daily sun protection.

Choose products based on your skin type and introduce active ingredients gradually. With consistency and the right products, you can maintain comfortable, healthy-looking skin throughout the year.

Skincare Chats with Geena: From Skincare Enthusiast to Content Creation Maven

    Hey, welcome back!

Skincare Chats is a blog series I started in 2022. My aim is to bridge the gap between skincare enthusiasts and effective skincare practices. Engaging with other beauty lovers gives me ideas, innovation and a sense of community.

Geena was one of the first skincare content creators whose content caught my eye after my IG hiatus. Her content on @skinandwhatnot is informative and very thorough. She also gives no-fluff reviews and shares her journey with acne.

    Let’s get into our chats!

Iruoma: Hey, Gee! Please introduce yourself.

Geena: My name’s Geena, and I like to talk about skincare.

Iruoma: Girl! Your IG is filled with your skincare product reviews and education! How did you fall in love with skincare?

Geena: I’ve always had oily skin, and my goal was to get my skin to look less shiny. That quest made me try many DIYs and stripping cleansers until my moisture barrier got impaired. I discovered skincare on Twitter, and here we are.

DIYs is a term short for Do It Yourself. This refers to steps or actions you take that do not involve a professional.

Iruoma: That is super relatable because my oily skin and acne led me here, too😂

Glad that the journey has led you to a better place!

    What’s your favourite skincare step?

Geena: It’s pretty difficult to choose between oily cleansing and hydrating. There is this level of relaxation that only comes from using an oily cleanser with great slip.

Iruoma: Hmm! Do you see? Only Geena would say something like this😂

You once compared our skincare routine to building a sandwich, if I’m not mistaken!

That brings me to the following question. What are your current a.m and p.m routines?

Geena: That sandwich analogy stayed in my drafts for so long because I needed it to come out the way it was in my head 🙈

My skin is seeing more acne than it has in years, which has influenced my routines greatly. I’ve had to find ways to stay grounded in simplicity while managing my concerns.

I use a gentle cleanser, a hydrating essence, an antioxidant serum, a gel-like moisturizer (either this or I skip), and sunscreen for my morning routine. On some mornings, I use a mild exfoliant.

While for my night routine, I double cleanse first. I haven’t been doing that a lot lately, though. Afterwards, I hydrate my skin and follow up with a moisturizer. I use a treatment serum that targets mild to moderate acne every night, a depigmenting cocktail every other night, and I exfoliate once a week. That’s a lot 😭.

Iruoma: Lmao! It’s a lot, but I like that you said it’s been trying to juggle simplicity and your concerns, which explains it. Sometimes we think being in skin care means your skin is magically better or you don’t go through the struggles, so thank you for sharing your journey too!

That brings me to another one. Why do you create skincare content?

Geena: I cannot say I have a big “why”. It’s just something I enjoy doing and an outlet from the seriousness of real life. I like that people get helped while I’m at it, but if it starts becoming too serious, I just might disappear.

    Iruoma: Better don’t disappear, please!

Finally, what’s your advice for new skincare enthusiasts or people who want to start caring for their skin intentionally?

Geena: In my opinion, I think there are only two ways to go about it. If you’re new to skincare and can afford to see a licensed professional, please do so. If you cannot, be ready to apply yourself and do much research. I built the routine that helped me say bye to eczema and acne in 2019 by sifting through information on Twitter. Not everyone is that patient.

Iruoma: This! I agree that everyone isn’t that patient!

This was good, Gee. Thank you so much!

If you want to learn practical skincare tips and get honest reviews about beauty products, Geena’s content on Instagram is a good bet!

Geena is a Medical Laboratory Scientist during the day and a budding creator round the clock. She enjoys forming opinions about skincare products as much as she enjoys good food.

The Best Christmas Gift Ideas For 2023: Your Ultimate Guide To Thoughtful Gifting This Christmas!

The best Christmas gift ideas guide wouldn’t have been possible without Dr Adesuwa. Adesuwa is a medical doctor who doubles as a gift curator building Luxe and Pearl Gift Co.

She loves music, enjoys baking and loves engaging in beautiful conversations.  I’m always pleasantly stunned whenever I get a gift box from her. That was the cue I needed to invite her to the blog because you’re my community and deserve the best tips!

I hope you find this helpful and, better still, try her services at luxeandpearlng on Instagram.

As the year winds down, we approach the most anticipated season!

We celebrate the birth and significance of our Lord Jesus Christ, beautiful decorations filling every corner of the streets, a well-deserved end-of-year break from work, time out with family members, and so much more.

Christmas time is one particular occasion that is looked forward to by lots of people, and you bet the best Christmas gift ideas would be on everyone’s minds! Be it the best Christmas gift for your mum, dad, partner or colleague.

This season involves a lot of gifting, both giving and receiving. These include corporate gifting, appreciation gifts, Secret Santa gifts, Hampers, Gift Baskets, etc.

If you’re looking for the best Christmas gift ideas within any budget, this is the place for you!

How do you make the most of gifting this Christmas?

Here are some helpful tips to guide you:

    Create a list!

Do this as early as you can. Look at the number and the people you would love to gift, then make a list.

This list could include parents, partners, children, co-workers/teammates, bosses, spiritual leaders, clients, and even random acts of kindness. List them all!

Christmas is a perfect time to appreciate people, show love and even make deposits in their emotional bank accounts.

    Create a budget

While creating a list of people to surprise with the best Christmas gift ideas you have, creating a budget is vital. Money is so important; thus, you must create a budget for each recipient of your gifts.

Some factors to consider are your financial capacity, your recipient’s taste, and their likes or needs.

I recommend planning ahead of time.

Decide on the type of gift

This next step is to decide on the type of gift you’re getting. Deciding on the kind of gift is also very important because you want to give a valuable and thoughtful gift.

Choosing a gift should be based on what the person receiving would like, want or something they don’t know even know they need.

I know that choosing one might feel daunting, so below are some ideas:

    Individualised Gift Boxes

These can contain several carefully and beautifully wrapped/packaged things suited to each receiver.

Some treats in these gift boxes include items like:

    Food items such as:

    • Cake loaves
    • Chocolates
    • Christmas cookies
    • Wines
    • Teas/hot chocolate packs, and so much more!

    Household items like:

    •  Scented candles,
    •  Diffusers.

    Beauty items like:

    • Body and bath sets
    • Skincare items
    • Perfumes

    Items to de-stress such as:

    • Colouring books,
    • Friendship games, etc

The best part about this gift idea is you can get creative while including any item.

    chocolate-themed-Christmas-gift-box-for-Christmas-ideas
    selfcare-Christmas-gift-box-idea

I always recommend that my customers include a “keepsake and functional gift” that the recipient can use even after the Christmas season.

Examples of these individualised gift boxes include:

    Corporate Gift Boxes

Christmas is a perfect opportunity for individuals and businesses in the corporate space to appreciate their staff, clients and partners. You want to send out gifts that accentuate your brand, stand out, boost relationships and keep your recipients talking about how thoughtful they were.

These could include treats, branded valuable items, personalised items, etc.

For small business owners, include some branded freebies in your clients’ orders to help with brand promotion and leave a lasting impression.

    Gift Baskets / Hampers

These are pretty popular in Nigeria during the Christmas season.

Deciding to go for a hamper/gift basket is also excellent. The best part about a hamper is that you can select and include a wide range of gifts.

While getting hampers, let the items be valuable and tailored to the receiver.

For instance, include healthy grocery options in your grocery hamper for someone on a fitness journey or an older person. This shows how intentional you were about that gift instead of random store-made hampers where you don’t even know the content.

Hampers aren’t only limited to groceries/food items; hampers could also contain household items, spa-themed hampers for wellness and relaxation, wine hampers, etc.

    Christmas-gift-deas-for-your-boss
    best-Christmas-gift-ideas-featuring-office-gift-boxes

    Goodie Bags

Goodie bags are a favourite among children and even some adults too.

Throw in some lovely treats, cake, and drinks into cute Christmas-themed bags and gifts to people around. These can include simple and fun items without breaking the bank! You’ll be surprised at how this can be one of the best Christmas ideas you come up with.

    Accompanying cards

Write out your notes and well wishes on the accompanying cards. I like to call this the “icing on the cake”. Including thoughtful messages on your Christmas cards adds a personalised touch to your gifts.

Share why you appreciate the person. Talk about how they made your year or contributed to your success/wellness. These messages go a long way.

Get a reliable and trusted vendor

Finally, the last tip. Having someone handle and sort out your gifting process with you is helpful.

Here’s where a gift vendor comes in! Finding the right gifting solution takes time and energy, so we make it easy for you.

Having catered to hundreds of clients over the past years, we help you through the process of curating, sourcing, packaging and delivery of your gifts.  It’s also advisable to plan early for these gifts to avoid being caught up in the holiday rush and a spike in the prices of items.

With these tips shared, you are on your way to giving the most unique, functional and thoughtful gifts that would make your recipient smile and gush for a very long time! The best Christmas gift ideas do not have to break the bank. They can also be thoughtful, hence a win-win!

The Christmas season is one filled with love, happiness and sharing. Let’s make it memorable for you and the ones you love!

Regular use of body lotions can improve the skin’s overall appearance, reducing the visibility of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven texture. With various scents and textures available, body lotions provide a luxurious and aromatic self-care experience, making skincare routines enjoyable and rewarding.

Nivea is a German skincare manufacturer that has been making quality products for over 100 years. For a brand that has been around for so long, it has gained worldwide recognition, allowing consumers to purchase its products all around the world.

Nivea products are not made for skin whitening, so even if the inscription on the container says “it lightens,” do not expect that, because it will not do anything of that sort for you!
This manufacturer’s products are mainly for moisturizing, hydrating, and brightening the skin.

I personally used this lotion alongside my dark-skinned roommate. We got one each and used the bottle for two months. During this period, I didn’t see any lightening effect on my skin, not even a slight one.
I noticed that it kept my skin moist, and hydrated, and smoothed rough parts of the skin.

This body lotion does not whiten the skin through bleaching, so this body lotion is perfect to keep your skin radiant, glowing, and spot-free.
Although if you use an exfoliating product or serum with this cream, it will help maintain your complexion and give it an even-toned appearance.

Nivea Even and Radiant Body Lotion will help to repair the skin and restore the skin’s damaged barrier in my experience. It clears skin rashes and does not contain skin-whitening ingredients.

Candid Skincare Chats With Iruoma Ft 2 besties; Chizelum Osonwa and Monisola Keshiro

    Hey, beauty!

How is this month “flying”?  I don’t mind at all, but it’s fascinating to me. Anyhoo, today’s post is on the skincare chats series I started in September. It’s supposed to be monthly, but school started last month and I couldn’t post this earlier.

Skincare chats is a series that highlights conversations around skincare experiences and beauty with skincare enthusiasts.

This time I interviewed 2 sweet girls who are special to me- my younger sister and my school daughter. They’re also both friends and we’ve been family friends for years! Watching their love for skincare spurred this post and interviewing them was just hilarious!

A selfie of Chizelum and Moni

Let’s get into it, shall we?

    Please introduce yourself, ladies.

    Chizelum: Hi I’m Chizelum Osonwa.

Moni: Hey my name is Monisola Keshiro.

A video version of our skincare chat

Moni, let’s start with you. How did you get started with skincare?

Moni: I started with “organic” skincare and never admit this to anyone.  In 2019, my friend who had really good skin and made black soap made one for me, and that was how my skin started looking worse. So I started my research and that’s how proper skincare began for me.

    Chizelum: Okurrr!

How did you get started with skincare, Chizelum?

Chizelum: Err, it was from my older sister Iruoma. I would say that I had no particular issue with my skin until I decided to get organic skincare after seeing my mum’s skin.

Unfortunately, I used one that had expired months ago which destroyed my skin barrier. That’s how my journey to healthy skin started.

The skin barrier refers to the outermost layer of the skin which acts as a protective shield from irritation and environmental stressors.

“Organic” has a bad rep for real, lol. Moni what got you hooked on skincare?

Moni: It would be from seeing results.  I love how people get to see the result of skincare and give compliments. It can be really encouraging. I got a lot of good compliments and my skin began to look healthy and that was what got me hooked.

It’s not hard to see why! What about you Chizelum?

Chizzy: Honestly I would say the same as Moni. Also, getting encouragement from my sister got me hooked.

Moni: Can I also add something?

    Sure, please!

Moni: Another thing that has got me hooked is the confidence I feel in my natural skin.

I agree babes! The confidence in healthy skin cannot be overstated. Let’s get into skin types. Do you guys know your skin type?

    Chizzy: Yeah, I’m dry skin

    Moni: I’m a combination skin

Awesome! What does your current routine look like?

Chizzy: My cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and SPF in the morning. I also alternate my Lactic acid serum.

    What about you Moni?

Moni: My routine is simple as well. I cleanse, moisturize and use SPF during the day. Then at night I just exfoliate and moisturize. My exfoliating is usually at night.

~Mini break because these girls were killing me with laughter~

What 3 beauty products can’t you do without?

Moni: I would say ingredients and products. My fave is niacinamide. That guy is the key! Vitamin C is the second and finally sunscreen. Can’t do without them.

Chizzy: I can’t do without my cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF. Basically the basics!

Love that for you guys. Moni you mentioned a time you had a terrible experience with “organic skincare”.  Please share your terrible experience with skincare.

Moni: The first one would be how it destroyed my skin barrier and made me break out badly. The second terrible experience was how a product didn’t meet my expectations. I heard so much about this product and let’s just say I was the opposite of the reviews.

That hurts! Chizzy what about you?

    Chizelum Osonwa at a restaurant

Chizzy: Mine would be Cerave replenishing SA cleanser. It started out working well for me and then after a few weeks, my face went haywire. That was the end for me.

It sucks! Before we go to our last question. How are you guys feeling by the way?

Moni: Like a superstar, dear. I feel like I have to sound intelligent.

Chizzy: Yeah there’s that, and having fun doing this!

Here for it! What’s your advice to skincare newbies?

Moni: 3 things. Don’t follow trends/ what your friend is doing. Know your skin type, and start with the fundamentals. You can then build from there.

Look at you giving skincare advice now, boo! That’s growth. Chizzy what about you?

Chizzy: My answer is the same, to be honest. Know your skin type and start with the basics. Also, check for reviews before buying a product, so you don’t waste money. Lastly, please RESEARCH!

Moni: I have one more thing to add. Please always do a patch test.

Chizzy: Yes! Especially if you have sensitive skin like me.

Moni: I’m guilty of not doing this often, but it would save you from skin reactions.

    Chizzy: Exactly!

This is probably my own toxic skincare trait. I barely patch test. You can see I’m learning from you both too. Any last remarks?

Moni: Follow Iruoma!  Why are you not following her blog and IG, or Twitter?

Chizzy: C’mon!  What are you doing? Don’t let us ask again!

    Awwww! Thank you, babies.

This was the most random and sweetest shout-out and it was captured in the video above.

  • Honest Skincare Chats with Iruoma ft Shekinah Ambali: Skincare Enthusiast Interview

Honest Skincare Chats with Iruoma ft Shekinah Ambali: Skincare Enthusiast Interview

Almost every time I come across Shekinah’s Whatsapp stories, it’s either she’s experimenting with a new food recipe or sharing a skin care product she just tried out as a skincare enthusiast.

I reached out to her with this idea to share the experiences of other skincare enthusiasts in order to encourage others who are about to start their journey or are already veterans in skincare.

Let’s get into our skincare chat!

    Could you introduce yourself?

    I’m Shekinah Ambali.

I’ve seen some of your skincare products on Whatsapp and how you talk about them. How did you get started with skincare?

I started during the lockdown in 2020. You know we really had nothing to do around that time and I had the time to notice the texture of my skin, my darker cheeks, and my neck. I didn’t exactly start taking care of my exact skincare issue (hyperpigmentation) until September 2021.

    Skincare enthusiast Shekinah Ambali

It’s the “time to notice the texture of your skin” for me, lol! Something good came out of that time, yeah?

Yes! I also have a family that is really into skincare, so it started around the same time for all of us too.

That’s actually cool! I remember seeing you praise an aunty once for some skincare products on your status. Was there any product that made you hooked on skincare?

Lol. I know right! The first product that got me hooked on skincare initially was the Niacinamide serum from Dang! Right now, it has to be snail mucin by CosRx.

    Some of Shekinah’s Skincare empties

Interesting! Niacinamide is a badass ingredient so that’s understandable. Plus most people are in love with the snail mucin from CosRx. Tell me, what is your skintype and what does your current skincare routine look like?

I have combination skin. For my current skincare routine, I am a huge collector of cleansers! I love to switch them as the spirit leads so I cleanse with either Cosrx’s Low pH good morning cleanse, the Inkeylist’s Fulvic acid brightening cleanser, Cerave’s hydrating cleanser, or Omari’s cleansing powder.

After cleansing, I follow with a toner/ micellar water. Next up is a moisturizer (currently sticking with Simple) I follow that with my snail mucin, serums (niacinamide&vitamin c), and finally any sunscreen of choice. I collect sunscreens too!

Okay, you’re a collector because what is this stash? God when!

All thanks to my older sister.

Perks of having an older sister! Speaking of which, what 3 beauty products can’t you do without?

They would be Snail mucin, AHA/BHA toner, and Niacinamide serum.

That’s interesting. Let’s go back to your skincare routine. What’s the favorite part of your routine?

Moisturizinggg! I try to use products that moisturize my skin more regardless of their ‘special job’ as this just helps me feel good all day long.

The emphasis is deep, but having your skin hydrated is important so I get it. Have you ever had any terrible experience with a product?

No, I haven’t. I like to think I’m God’s favorite child because I barely have a negative skin reaction to any new product I try.

Lucky you for real! If someone starting out their skincare journey meets you today, what would you advise them?

I’ll advise the person to get basic skincare products for starters, and not be swayed by the skincare rave out there. Make sure to use sunscreen always, and most importantly, avoid “organic” skincare products!

  • 6 Easy Ways To Care for Natural Hair- A Naturalista’s Guide.

6 Easy Ways To Care for Natural Hair- A Naturalista’s Guide.

My friend Uloma is a natural hair enthusiast and YouTuber. I’ve always admired this babe’s journey into the natural hair space and her growth so far.

That’s the reason I reached out for her to write some easy ways we could care for natural hair because she does so effortlessly. Whether you’re a newbie, pro, or even just transitioning, she has a tip for all of us so sit tight and enjoy!

Beauty is what you make standard. Ranging from your skin, hair, and nails to what is within.

All hair types are beautiful, but for you black, brown beautiful goddess, what grows out from your scalp is your crown.

You can alter the natural state of your hair, but while you wear those bouncy kinky coils like a crown, here are some ways to maintain and care for it. It’s pretty high maintenance, but not difficult.

    🌻” Health” over “Length”

Honey, the sooner you understand this, the more your hair will flourish.

Adequate hydration, exercise, positive thinking, hair hygiene, iron, and folic acid supplements, fruits, and vegetables are some of the ways to improve the health of your hair, skin, and nails without blowing your account.

Just give tender loving care to your body.

    🌻Protective styling

Starting from here makes a lot of sense because this is where most naturalistas lose and break off their hair. Your protective styling should be tension free, protect your ends, and be kept for one-month minimum. One month so that you can appreciate the undergrowth.

🌻Caring for your hair while in a protective style

It doesn’t just end at making cornrows or braids and then abandoning your hair and scalp. While in the style, you should oil your scalp, and moisturize your hair and its ends before sealing with butter or heavy oil. It’s also advisable you wash your scalp bi-weekly while in that protective style. Clean scalp equals healthy hair growth!

    🌻Protective style takes down

After keeping your hair for a month, it’s time to take it down. You can go longer than one month, but anything more than two months is recipe for disaster in my opinion.

The process of taking down your protective style determines whether you’ll retain the growth you just acquired from leaving your hair alone for a month.

Using products with massive slip is key. Cheap conditioners are to the rescue for this. Never take down your hair dry. Never!

Uloma shows how to detangle your natural hair properly to retain length.

While taking down your hair, you want to make sure to finger detangle first before going in with your detangling tool like a comb, brush, or whatever rocks your boat.

PRO TIP- always use your tool from the end to the root of your hair, and not vice versa.

    🌻Wash day

Wash day is what comes after your protective style takedown. My advice is to eat well before you proceed with your wash day and be very patient and gentle. The same goes for your protective style takedown. The nitty-gritty of wash day will be shared in a future blog post because it is a full regimen.

🌻Prepping your hair for the next protective style.

I didn’t know the importance of this until recently. The whole point of preparing your hair for the next protective style is to keep it stretched and reduce breakage while manipulating it for the next protective style.

After your wash day, the best healthy method is to moisturize your hair and seal it with any hair butter. After that, you braid your hair in sections, preferably eight sections, and then leave your hair to dry in the braids. This may take 1-2days so no pressure. Please never leave your hair to dry in its natural state!

The point of all these steps and extra care is to retain length. Black hair grows if you care for it!

How do you care for your natural hair? Share with me in the comments!
