Finally Done: Reminiscing Through 9 Years as a Medical Student (Part 3)

Hey, beauty!

Glad you’re here for part 3 of my medical student journey to the MBBS series!

Your girl is officially a medical doctor and living in an answered prayer.

In part 1 of this series, I talked about the start of my college education and medical school. Most of the struggles and strike actions were also captured there

The second part was all about the people who made my journey easier. I promised to share the third part, so here we have it.

Finally, on the 30th of August, 2023, I graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. That day was filled with excitement and fear. Excitement because I was finally getting this done. Fear because I had an after-party and didn’t want it to go south.

Now that I think about it, all these fears were inconsequential. I had an absolutely good time surrounded by some of the people I love.

I got my makeup done by 5:30 a.m. as we needed to leave the house by 7 a.m. Shout out to @facesbymaraan. He did a GOOD job! Newsflash: We left by 8:24 a.m no thanks to waiting for everyone to get ready. The induction started at past 10 with a procession. This procession included professors and the registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

Afterward, we had an inspiring talk by Dr. Olayemi Dawodu. She’s one of the doctors who have subconsciously given me an idea of the kind of doctor I would love to be.

After the registrar’s speech, we had our oath-taking. The popular Hippocratic oath. At this point, it still felt surreal. Once the ceremony was over, no one prepared me for the chaos that followed.

I couldn’t take many pictures or even create the planned content. A few selfies and goodbyes later, I was on my way back home for the reception. Dancing into the hall was my highlight. One thing about me, I would always vibe differently when it comes to Igbo music. Blame it on my roots.

The rest of the day was pretty much prayers, pictures, videos, food, and music.

The 30th of August, 2023, will always be one I remember. My induction was right on time, and God is glorified.

I look forward to experiencing and sharing the adventures of post-graduation with you!

Thank you to everyone who made my day special. I truly am grateful.

Starting A Full Retinol Night Routine Featuring The Neutriherbs Retinol Range

PS; For full disclosure, this is a sponsored post, and my affiliate disclaimer assures you that whichever brand you come across on my blog is trustworthy!

For the longest time, I had read raves about a retinol night routine. If you’re a skincare enthusiast, then the retinol ingredient isn’t new to you. Scroll through SkincareTok, and you’ll find different takes and reviews about the variants of retinol, like tretinoin, adapalene, retinaldehyde, etc.

Frankly, it can be overwhelming, especially if you’re just starting. That’s where your favourite beauty doctor comes in! Yes, I’m referring to me, lol!

At the end of this post, there is a section for frequently asked questions about the use of retinol. It gives you a better understanding of this ingredient and makes it less ambiguous.

Retinol is the most researched ingredient in skincare and for a good reason. It has been found to have various benefits for the skin.

From reducing fine lines and wrinkles to improving skin tone and texture. The most exciting benefit of retinol is its stimulation of collagen production.

As we age, our skin’s ability to generate collagen reduces, hence the sagging effect older skin has. In other words, retinol improves the overall appearance of the skin. Some people have termed it an anti-ageing ingredient due to its many researched benefits.

Starting retinol for me involved asking questions, reading lots of reviews and moving beyond my fear of purging.

Pinterest-graphic-of-retinol-night-routine

According to Dr Deanne Robinson in Healthline, purging refers to when the skin’s cell turnover speeds up due to using an active ingredient. This leads to more skin shedding and, wait for it- excess sebum and a pimple or two (or more, yikes!)The long-term effect is to reveal clearer and younger skin.

Once I moved past the fear of introducing retinol into my skincare routine by weighing the benefits with the risk, the next step was finding the product.

I got my hands on the retinol range from Neutriherbs. Thankfully, it had the whole making of a retinol night routine with four skincare products which were:

  • Cleanser
  • Toner
  • Serum &
  • Moisturiser.

While retinol is included in all these products, was it worth the hype for me?

Let’s get a closer look!

PS: My retinol night routine was done for three weeks. It’s typically advised to use an ingredient for up to 4 weeks to get the best results, but I wanted to share this as soon as possible.

My Retinol Night Routine Steps

Neutriherbs Pro-Retinol Cleanser

retinol-cleanser-by-neutriherbs

First impression

The retinol cleanser comes in a pristine white and purple tube with a silver cap. It claims to cleanse, remove impurities and excess sebum gently.

The texture is almost creamy with a sticky feel and has a pearly white colour.

While it does not have a particular fragrance, I noticed a slight scent that I can’t describe but is not overwhelming. The good thing about the texture of this cleanser is that a little goes a long way, so it’s worth the cost.

neutriherbs-retinol-cleanser-texture
Ingredients list:
Aqua, Glycerin, Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Lauric Acid, Glycol Distearate, Peg-150 Distearate, Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate, Acrylates Copolymer, Peg-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Decyl Glucoside, Retinyl Palmitate (Retinol), Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Chloride, Chlorphenesin, Coconut Acid.
retinol-cleanser-ingredients-list

Claims:

According to their website, this cleanser  “is amazing at gently removing oil, dirt, impurities, and makeup trapped in your pores, leaving skin feeling fresh, clean and soft without over-drying. The Retinol cleanser works gently without stripping your skin of its natural oils as it was designed to be gentle and moisturizing.”

My experience

iruoma-holding-a-retinol-cleanser

For my retinol night routine, I use this cleanser only at night. True to its claims, it is pretty gentle and moisturises my skin. It took a while for me to get used to the creamy feel of the product. It was also a relief to find that my skin didn’t feel stripped after washing, as they claimed.

Even though there are no specifications for when the cleanser should be used, I used it during my night routine because retinol is part of the ingredients. It’s also safe for daily use as the concentration of retinol in the cleanser is not high enough to cause any irritation.

How to Use the Retinol Cleanser

  • Apply directly to palms and straight to a wet face.
  • Rub in circular motions for 30-60 seconds.
  • Rinse off with cold or lukewarm water
  • You can use this cleanser every night, even on non-retinol nights

My verdict

This cleanser would be an 8/10 for me. It is gentle enough to be used daily, has a non-stripping effect and does an excellent job at cleansing.

Neutriherbs Pro-Retinol Toner

 retinol-toner-review

First impression

The first time I saw this toner on Instagram, I was sceptical. While I’m familiar with hydrating and exfoliating toners, I had never seen or tried one with retinol as its star ingredient.

The first thing that hits me is consistency in packaging. The product comes in a transparent 100ml purple plastic container and a white cap.

I love the tiny stopper at the in-hole opening, which would prevent the spilling of the product.

The product is transparent, and its texture is thicker than regular toners but still lightweight. It also doesn’t have a distinct fragrance.

Ingredients list:
Aqua, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Betaine, Panthenol, Tranexamic Acid, Retinol, Hydroxypropyl Tetrahydropyrantriol, Oligopeptide-1, Arginine, Serine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Propanediol, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydroxyacetophenone, 1,2-Hexanediol, Bht, Xanthan Gum.

Claims:

From the ingredient list, it’s good to see that it contains retinol and tranexamic acid, panthenol, hyaluronic acid and peptides. These ingredients, in a nutshell, help improve the skin’s hydration, elasticity, target dark spots (tranexamic acid) and a better overall appearance.

According to their website, the retinol toner “ gives this natural hydrated glow, firms and makes skin instantly look plumper with less sign of ageing… It won’t dry out your skin while making your face feel fresh, tight, luminous, clean and very soft after use.”

retinol-toner-by-neutriherbs

My experience

This toner has a hydrating feel that is true to its claims. My face would feel plump and soft after use, and there were no signs of irritation or stinging.  I cannot attest to the claim of fewer signs of ageing just from its use.

On the product’s details, it is recommended to use a cotton pad, but I love to use my palms to apply toners directly to my face.

iruoma-holding-a-retinol-toner
retinol-toner-texture

If you use a cotton pad, don’t be scared when you notice dirt on the pad. That experience reduces as you continue to use the toner in your routine.

How to use

  • Apply the toner unto palms (or cotton pads)
  • Apply on the face in circular motions from the inside to the outside.
  • Allow face dry before applying the serum

My Verdict

I’ll give this a 7/10. I think it’s an excellent addition to my retinol night routine, but I could do without it. The score covers the thoughtful packaging, great texture, and hydrating feel it leaves on my skin.

Neutriherbs Retinol Serum

retinol-with-vitamin-e-serum-by-neutriherbs

First impression

The retinol serum is where most of the retinol concentration is at. It comes in an opaque 30 ml bottle with a stopper. The serum bottle has a white and purple wrapper with the text in purple.

It contains vitamin E, which is an antioxidant. That means asides from the retinol in this serum, there is also a skin barrier support ingredient.

The serum has a slightly runny texture and no distinct fragrance too. There are also directions on the body which is always a win for me!

neutriherbs-retinol-serum-texture
Ingredients list:
Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Betaine, Punica Granatum Fruit Extract, Trehalose, Green Tea Extract, Olea Europaea Fruit Water, Hydrolyzed Adansonia Digitata Extract, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Tocopherol (Vitamin E),  Allantoin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Retinol (Vitamin A), Peg-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Hydrolyzed Albumen, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum

Claims

According to the product’s description, this serum “ Unclogs and shrinks pores to clear up acne and prevent future breakouts”.

My Experience

iruoma-holding-a-retinol-serum

On application, it has a cool feel to it. This serum is also very lightweight, and I especially loved how my skin always felt in the morning after my retinol routine- almost as if it felt smoother. That would be true to its claims of unclogging the pores and making the skin feel firmer.

The good thing about this serum is that it comes in a 0.05% concentration of retinol which is beginner friendly!

I recommend this serum if you get any product from this retinol range!

How to use

*Please patch test before use.

  • Take 2-3 pumps.
  • Apply on the dry face (after the toner or cleanser).
  • Wait till it dries before moving on to the final step.

My verdict

This is a 9/10 for me. The low concentration, lightweight texture and non-irritating features make it a recommended product, especially for beginners!

Neutriherbs Retinol Cream for Acne and Anti-aging

neutriherbs-retinol-moisturiser

First impression

The retinol moisturiser is my favourite packaged product in this series. I say so because the ease of application is superb; it has a lush texture and gives my face a glow after use.

It comes in a 50 ml jar with a high-pressure pump. That allows you to squeeze out the product without getting your fingers in.

Like the serum, it also has some instructions for use on the back of the product.

neutriherbs-retinol-moisturiser-texture
Ingredients list:
WATER, GLYCERIN, PROPYLENE GLYCOL, SQUALANE, DIMETHICONE, PARAFFINUM LIQUIDUM, GREEN TEA EXTRACT, MALUS DOMESTICA (APPLE) FRUIT CELL CULTURE EXTRACT, CETEARYL ALCOHOL, OCIMUM SANCTUM LEAF EXTRACT, CETEARYL GLUCOSIDE, PEG-100 STEARATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, HYDROGENATED COCO-GLYCERIDES, TOCOPHEROL(VITAMIN E), CARBOMER, TRIETHANOLAMINE, PANTHENOL(VITAMIN B5), HYALURONIC ACID, PHENOXYETHANOL, HYDROXYETHYLCELLULOSE, RETINOL, DISODIUM EDTA, DEXTRAN
ingredients-of-retinol-moisturiser

Claims

According to the website, the retinol cream “ delivers the highest concentration of Retinol (Vitamin A) deep into the skin’s surface quickly and effectively to help renew and rejuvenate your skin… It also supports natural collagen production and faster cell turnover to make skin feel smoother, healthy and young looking visible.”

My Experience

beauty-blogger-iruoma-holding-a-retinol-moisturiser

I loved the creamy texture of my skin. On the first night, my skin felt “overwhelmed” by the texture, but that got better as I continued to use it.

I experimented with this moisturiser on a different night to see if it made any difference. True to its claims, it absorbed into my skin and gave me this glazed doughnut finish. The best part was how supple my face felt in the morning after use.

How to use

neutriherbs-retinol-moisturiser-review
  • After the retinol serum, take a pump of the moisturiser
  • Rub in circular motions, and do not forget your neck and ears.

My Verdict

It’s a 9.5/10 for me!

Three weeks later

I took some pictures during my use to ascertain if there were any changes or not. One thing I noticed was my skin felt firmer and less textured.

While there are arguments about retinol fading hyperpigmentation, some studies show that retinoids, in combination with hyperpigmentation fighters, are more effective.

I also noticed some flakiness around my jawlines by the second week, and I had some new breakouts on my face. While that was annoying, it wasn’t surprising considering the side effects of retinol. These effects calmed down by the following week.

Overall, this range gives a great start to anyone who feels overwhelmed about starting with retinol, and I look forward to how my skin looks with consistent use.

Frequently Asked Questions about Retinol

  1. Why is retinol used at night?

Retinol makes the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Using it at night minimises the risk of irritation and sun damage. This is also one of the reasons you can not do without sunscreen when incorporating retinol into your skincare routine.

  1. How to introduce retinol into your skincare routine

It’s essential to introduce retinol gradually into your skincare routine. Experts recommend once a week and working your way upward. This gives your skin time to adjust to the concentration of the ingredients and minimise irritation.

The Neutriherbs retinol serum has a low concentration, so start with two times a week with the instructions on the body and gradually increase the frequency of use.

PS: If you have concerns or questions about incorporating retinol into your skincare routine, please consult an esthetician or dermatologist.
  1. Where does retinol go in a skincare routine?

Retinol is typically used at night, after cleansing and toning (optional), but before moisturizing. This helps it work effectively without interactions with other active ingredients.

There is also this retinol “sandwich” method, which means applying a lightweight moisturiser before a retinol cream or serum and then finishing with your moisturiser. This is to minimize the chances of irritation from the retinol.

I haven’t tried that for myself, but if you have sensitive skin, that would be something to try.

  1. Side effects of using retinol

As I mentioned in my overall experience, retinol has some side effects. From “purging” to dryness and flakiness. It’s nothing to be worried about with adequate moisturising and spf to help the skin barrier.

It’s just the nature of this ingredient, so it’s best to be prepared.

In the long run, you’ll be glad you incorporated it into your routine.

Skincare Chats with Geena: From Skincare Enthusiast to Content Creation Maven

Hey, welcome back!

Skincare Chats is a blog series I started in 2022. My aim is to bridge the gap between skincare enthusiasts and effective skincare practices. Engaging with other beauty lovers gives me ideas, innovation and a sense of community.

Geena was one of the first skincare content creators whose content caught my eye after my IG hiatus. Her content on @skinandwhatnot is informative and very thorough. She also gives no-fluff reviews and shares her journey with acne.

Let’s get into our chats!

Iruoma: Hey, Gee! Please introduce yourself.

Geena: My name’s Geena, and I like to talk about skincare.

Iruoma: Girl! Your IG is filled with your skincare product reviews and education! How did you fall in love with skincare?

Geena: I’ve always had oily skin, and my goal was to get my skin to look less shiny. That quest made me try many DIYs and stripping cleansers until my moisture barrier got impaired. I discovered skincare on Twitter, and here we are.

DIYs is a term short for Do It Yourself. This refers to steps or actions you take that do not involve a professional.

Iruoma: That is super relatable because my oily skin and acne led me here, too😂

Glad that the journey has led you to a better place!

What’s your favourite skincare step?

Geena: It’s pretty difficult to choose between oily cleansing and hydrating. There is this level of relaxation that only comes from using an oily cleanser with great slip.

Iruoma: Hmm! Do you see? Only Geena would say something like this😂

You once compared our skincare routine to building a sandwich, if I’m not mistaken!

That brings me to the following question. What are your current a.m and p.m routines?

Geena: That sandwich analogy stayed in my drafts for so long because I needed it to come out the way it was in my head 🙈

My skin is seeing more acne than it has in years, which has influenced my routines greatly. I’ve had to find ways to stay grounded in simplicity while managing my concerns.

I use a gentle cleanser, a hydrating essence, an antioxidant serum, a gel-like moisturizer (either this or I skip), and sunscreen for my morning routine. On some mornings, I use a mild exfoliant.

While for my night routine, I double cleanse first. I haven’t been doing that a lot lately, though. Afterwards, I hydrate my skin and follow up with a moisturizer. I use a treatment serum that targets mild to moderate acne every night, a depigmenting cocktail every other night, and I exfoliate once a week. That’s a lot 😭.

Iruoma: Lmao! It’s a lot, but I like that you said it’s been trying to juggle simplicity and your concerns, which explains it. Sometimes we think being in skin care means your skin is magically better or you don’t go through the struggles, so thank you for sharing your journey too!

That brings me to another one. Why do you create skincare content?

Geena: I cannot say I have a big “why”. It’s just something I enjoy doing and an outlet from the seriousness of real life. I like that people get helped while I’m at it, but if it starts becoming too serious, I just might disappear.

Iruoma: Better don’t disappear, please!

Finally, what’s your advice for new skincare enthusiasts or people who want to start caring for their skin intentionally?

Geena: In my opinion, I think there are only two ways to go about it. If you’re new to skincare and can afford to see a licensed professional, please do so. If you cannot, be ready to apply yourself and do much research. I built the routine that helped me say bye to eczema and acne in 2019 by sifting through information on Twitter. Not everyone is that patient.

Iruoma: This! I agree that everyone isn’t that patient!

This was good, Gee. Thank you so much!

If you want to learn practical skincare tips and get honest reviews about beauty products, Geena’s content on Instagram is a good bet!

Geena is a Medical Laboratory Scientist during the day and a budding creator round the clock. She enjoys forming opinions about skincare products as much as she enjoys good food.

The Best Christmas Gift Ideas For 2023: Your Ultimate Guide To Thoughtful Gifting This Christmas!

The best Christmas gift ideas guide wouldn’t have been possible without Dr Adesuwa. Adesuwa is a medical doctor who doubles as a gift curator building Luxe and Pearl Gift Co.

She loves music, enjoys baking and loves engaging in beautiful conversations.  I’m always pleasantly stunned whenever I get a gift box from her. That was the cue I needed to invite her to the blog because you’re my community and deserve the best tips!

I hope you find this helpful and, better still, try her services at luxeandpearlng on Instagram.

As the year winds down, we approach the most anticipated season!

We celebrate the birth and significance of our Lord Jesus Christ, beautiful decorations filling every corner of the streets, a well-deserved end-of-year break from work, time out with family members, and so much more.

Christmas time is one particular occasion that is looked forward to by lots of people, and you bet the best Christmas gift ideas would be on everyone’s minds! Be it the best Christmas gift for your mum, dad, partner or colleague.

This season involves a lot of gifting, both giving and receiving. These include corporate gifting, appreciation gifts, Secret Santa gifts, Hampers, Gift Baskets, etc.

If you’re looking for the best Christmas gift ideas within any budget, this is the place for you!

How do you make the most of gifting this Christmas?

Here are some helpful tips to guide you:

Create a list!

Do this as early as you can. Look at the number and the people you would love to gift, then make a list.

This list could include parents, partners, children, co-workers/teammates, bosses, spiritual leaders, clients, and even random acts of kindness. List them all!

Christmas is a perfect time to appreciate people, show love and even make deposits in their emotional bank accounts.

Create a budget

While creating a list of people to surprise with the best Christmas gift ideas you have, creating a budget is vital. Money is so important; thus, you must create a budget for each recipient of your gifts.

Some factors to consider are your financial capacity, your recipient’s taste, and their likes or needs.

I recommend planning ahead of time.

Decide on the type of gift

This next step is to decide on the type of gift you’re getting. Deciding on the kind of gift is also very important because you want to give a valuable and thoughtful gift.

Choosing a gift should be based on what the person receiving would like, want or something they don’t know even know they need.

I know that choosing one might feel daunting, so below are some ideas:

Individualised Gift Boxes

These can contain several carefully and beautifully wrapped/packaged things suited to each receiver.

Some treats in these gift boxes include items like:

Food items such as:

  • Cake loaves
  • Chocolates
  • Christmas cookies
  • Wines
  • Teas/hot chocolate packs, and so much more!

Household items like:

  •  Scented candles,
  •  Diffusers.

Beauty items like:

  • Body and bath sets
  • Skincare items
  • Perfumes

Items to de-stress such as:

  • Colouring books,
  • Friendship games, etc

The best part about this gift idea is you can get creative while including any item.

chocolate-themed-Christmas-gift-box-for-Christmas-ideas
selfcare-Christmas-gift-box-idea

I always recommend that my customers include a “keepsake and functional gift” that the recipient can use even after the Christmas season.

Examples of these individualised gift boxes include:

Corporate Gift Boxes

Christmas is a perfect opportunity for individuals and businesses in the corporate space to appreciate their staff, clients and partners. You want to send out gifts that accentuate your brand, stand out, boost relationships and keep your recipients talking about how thoughtful they were.

These could include treats, branded valuable items, personalised items, etc.

For small business owners, include some branded freebies in your clients’ orders to help with brand promotion and leave a lasting impression.

Gift Baskets / Hampers

These are pretty popular in Nigeria during the Christmas season.

Deciding to go for a hamper/gift basket is also excellent. The best part about a hamper is that you can select and include a wide range of gifts.

While getting hampers, let the items be valuable and tailored to the receiver.

For instance, include healthy grocery options in your grocery hamper for someone on a fitness journey or an older person. This shows how intentional you were about that gift instead of random store-made hampers where you don’t even know the content.

Hampers aren’t only limited to groceries/food items; hampers could also contain household items, spa-themed hampers for wellness and relaxation, wine hampers, etc.

Christmas-gift-deas-for-your-boss
best-Christmas-gift-ideas-featuring-office-gift-boxes

Goodie Bags

Goodie bags are a favourite among children and even some adults too.

Throw in some lovely treats, cake, and drinks into cute Christmas-themed bags and gifts to people around. These can include simple and fun items without breaking the bank! You’ll be surprised at how this can be one of the best Christmas ideas you come up with.

Accompanying cards

Write out your notes and well wishes on the accompanying cards. I like to call this the “icing on the cake”. Including thoughtful messages on your Christmas cards adds a personalised touch to your gifts.

Share why you appreciate the person. Talk about how they made your year or contributed to your success/wellness. These messages go a long way.

Get a reliable and trusted vendor

Finally, the last tip. Having someone handle and sort out your gifting process with you is helpful.

Here’s where a gift vendor comes in! Finding the right gifting solution takes time and energy, so we make it easy for you.

Having catered to hundreds of clients over the past years, we help you through the process of curating, sourcing, packaging and delivery of your gifts.  It’s also advisable to plan early for these gifts to avoid being caught up in the holiday rush and a spike in the prices of items.

With these tips shared, you are on your way to giving the most unique, functional and thoughtful gifts that would make your recipient smile and gush for a very long time! The best Christmas gift ideas do not have to break the bank. They can also be thoughtful, hence a win-win!

The Christmas season is one filled with love, happiness and sharing. Let’s make it memorable for you and the ones you love!

Could Rangla Punjab be the best Indian restaurant in Lagos? Read My Detailed Review To Find Out!

Meet your reviewers L-R: Iruoma, Oma, Chris and Feyi.

Rangla Punjab restaurant, Victoria Island

My friends are I decided to try something different to celebrate being done with our final exams. We recently finished school after nine years. One way to do so was by trying out what I hoped to be the best Indian restaurant in Lagos.

This restaurant is called Rangla Punjab. It is located at number 49 Adeola Odeku Street, victoria island, Lagos.

My friends were skeptical when I suggested it from the list Chris sent, but I managed to convince them and was hoping they won’t regret trusting my choice!

Atmosphere and Decor

My favourite corner of the restaurant

The ambience is beautiful! It’s  Indian-centric, with paintings and inscriptions right from the entrance. It has a traditional bus (almost life-like) decor at the dining area’s corner, depicting their culture. My favourite part of the decor was the swinging cushions. I had seen it in a review and looked forward to being on them!

The lighting is also pretty good for pictures and an overall look. My friends and I came at night, but our pictures still turned out great. If you’re someone who likes to document videos and pictures, that’s a plus.

The restaurant has a simple arrangement for the sitting area. Across are the cushions with colourful paintings of  Indian drummers on the walls.

There was another area that was booked so that I couldn’t see the arrangement, but ours had a table with four chairs, and that was in about four sets. There’s also a wall of picture frames with inscriptions related to drinks. I thought it was pretty cool because it’s a great background.

Food

One thing that makes Rangla Punjab considerably the best Indian restaurant in Lagos is the dishes!

I’ve tried some Indian dishes from the Gypsy’s restaurant and bar, but this took it up a notch. The dishes we had were:

  1. Boneless mutton biryani
  2. Murg Dharba
  3. Naan bread (butter)
  4. Makkani kukkad
  5. Mutton dhaba (boneless)
  6. Steamed rice

The good thing is you can play “safe” with these dishes because their taste profile isn’t too different from what we’re used to. We also decided to get different dishes so we could have a taste of everyone’s order.

Here’s what my friends had to say about their experience:

L-R: Chris, Feyi, Iruoma and Oma.

Oma

I’m not usually a fan of any other country’s food (I promise I’m not racist, lol) but the food from Rangla punjab was so good and very filling!

I especially enjoyed the boneless mutton because it had lots of soft and tasty meat chunks. I definitely recommend and would go back.

Chris

Although their IG page and even the exterior of the restaurant might be unappealing, it’s a whole new experience on entering! The service was so good it was almost criminal not to tip. The waiter took his time to explain everything on the menu and give recommendations. He also told us where the best lighting was and took good pictures of us.

The food was great in quantity and quality, and we ate to our full. I had enough for breakfast the following day.

I’ll rate them an 8/10 because no one is perfect and secondly, they refused to let Iruoma manage their social media account!

Feyi

The food was amazing!

It was my first time trying Indian food, and I have no regrets. The naan bread and buttered chicken was sooo good, and the chicken was soft. The only thing I didn’t like were the extras.

So asides our order, we were given extra spices and even onion bulbs. Yes, an actual raw onion to eat! Other than that, the main meals themesleves? *chef kiss*!

The staff are also super courteous and helpful.

naan-buttered-bread-and-sauce-served-at-rangla-punjab

While we waited for our order, we were served a starter on the house. It’s called papad with chutney and pepper.

papad-and-chutney-starter-at-rangla-punjab

Papad and chutney sauce for starters

The papad tasted like local pringles and was too spicy for me, but my friends enjoyed it weirdly enough.

We ordered drinks called Lassi. They were the sweet lassi and vanilla lassi. There were a variety of drinks and cocktails with names I can’t remember, so we went with the ones that had familiar words (sweet and vanilla).

The lassi drinks were pretty much yogurt with an extra touch. They put ice in it as well. It took a while for my tastebuds to get used to it, but eventually it did. I definitely recommend especially the sweet one.

We spent a total of 46,000 Naira for the 4 of us and still had enough to take away.

Service

Our experience with the staff was quite wholesome. They let us take pictures and were willing to help. Before getting there, I sent a message to their WhatsApp customer care line, which I got from their Instagram profile. Their responses were prompt, and I was also sent the menu and rates.

indian-themed-decor-at-the-best-indian-restaurant-in-lagos

Rangla Punjab is good for a family gathering, a bridal shower, a chilled evening out, a date, etc.

I loved the waiter who attended to us. He was very professional, quick to answer our questions and ensured we were comfortable. I know it’s their job, but it was exceptional. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get his name so that you can ask him.

Aside from the dining experience, they host a buffet service every Sunday. Most of the details would be found on their IG.

I believe that Rangla Punjab could be the best Indian restaurant in Lagos with all that we experienced. Let me know if you do try this restaurant!

Have you tried this restaurant?

Is there an Indian restaurant in Lagos you think could beat this? Share with me so I can visit.

Celebrating Twenty-Six With a Bucket List: 30 Things To Do Before 30

Hello, 26!

Who starts a new year with a list of 30 things to do before 30? Iruoma!

Before I get into my list, here are a few things I’ve been thinking about

I know we say age is just a number, but am I the one clocking this age? It feels surreal because I remember looking at people at that age with certain expectations. Obviously, that’s not my story, but today is not the day to think about the “what ifs” or “maybes.” I’m also quite glad about mine thus far because God is definitely glorified.

This year, I planned to enjoy the day thoroughly (and I did!). The last time I was really in the moment was for my 23rd birthday during the pandemic. Subsequently, I was always sad whenever my birthday came around because I felt stagnant.

Thankfully, this year was much better, and while being done with school is one of the reasons, I think growing has helped with that.

My bucket list is 30 random things I would love to do before turning 30. Thirty years is a big deal, and I’ve heard it’s as enjoyable as you want it. So instead of dreading my 30s because of the expectations I put on myself, I’ll take the better route and look forward to it while living!

iruoma-in-a-swim-suit

Be sure to follow me on Instagram and TikTok for more daily content. You may just see these moments happen in real time!

Let’s go ahead!

1. New piercings

Getting new piercings is top on my list for the late part of my 20s. I already got one in 2020 but only the right ear appropriately healed. That was my fault anyways; that’s not the point. I’m thinking of a new ear piercing and a nose one.

2. A Tattoo

I’ve always wanted a classy tattoo. You know, those that are small, noticeable and spark conversations? Those kinds! Now that I know what I want to get, all that remains is to move to my place so I don’t answer many questions- lool!

3. Travel to Paris again

The first time I went to Paris was as a child in secondary school. It was a school trip, and I barely knew the significance of what I was experiencing save for “it’s a different country.” Now that I’m older, I want to visit Paris for two reasons:

  • Explore the beauty section- France (Europe generally) has a track record of some of the best skincare and beauty products.
  • It’s the city of love, duh?

4. Get married

This is self-explanatory. winks

5. Author a best-selling book (or 2)

Writing a book and publishing it has always been my dream. I grew up reading and loved to tell my sisters all the stories I made up. Getting into uni took that from me (yes, I must blame medical school), but my desire to share something with the world runs deep, and I look forward to it, God willing!

6. Move to a new country

Who doesn’t have this on their bucket list?

I want to experience different cultures, and people and try something different from what I’ve always known.

7. Solo Travelling

While we can agree that the world isn’t safe, especially if you’re a woman travelling alone, I still want to experience travelling alone. I follow Alma Asinobi on Twitter and Instagram, and she shares her experience as a travel blogger. I think one should experience travelling alone once in their lifetime. If it happens before 30, that would be awesome! If not, I keep dreaming!

8. Pick Up French Again

When I wrote French in my WAEC (West African Examination Council examination), Hello? I could take on the world with my French,

Silly me!

I have toyed with the idea of learning French again and even joined a Duolingo group for French. Your girl missed all their physical meetings; I have to do better.

Otherwise, being able to communicate again in French is definitely one thing I look forward to before 30.

9. Have a Girls’ Getaway

They say adulthood creeps up on us, and we have to plan for every meeting with our friends. While that’s my reality, I look forward to a girls’ trip (or trips) before 30. It doesn’t even have to be complex or going to another country right now. A weekend without social media to refresh and have conversations would be fantastic!

10. Do Something Scary

The only thing I’ve been looking at is skydiving. I’m not swimming with sharks, please!

“Iruoma, where do you plan to do this?” Don’t ask me, dear. I’m dreaming well.

11. Take My Health Seriously

Being committed to health insurance and finding an exercise routine I love and can stick with is essential.

12. Educate Wo(men) on Skincare and Beauty

I got an opportunity to speak to students during a beauty campaign in May this year. What I heard from people concerning their perceptions of skincare and beauty made me resolve to educate more people.

13. A Makeover

Before 30, I hope to get a new permanent hair colour or cut my hair. Who knows what decision I’ll make?

The past months have seen me experimenting with eyelash extensions and getting my brows microbladed. I’m learning to be a bit more spontaneous and actually do things instead of overthinking.

14. Attend A Play Or Orchestra

I want to attend a play and enjoy the moment. I’m unsure what it would be about, but I’m itching to tick it off my list of things I want to experience.

15. Learn to Bake

For someone with a sweet tooth, I’m really terrible at baking. I’ve only assisted in making meat pies. Asides that, I binge-watch recipes on Food Network. There’s something about the taste of homemade pastries, and I want to experience that.

16. Host in my own home

I love hosting. I’ve watched my parents do it wholeheartedly and hope to pass it on. Before 30, I’ll love to have my friends over at my place and share deep conversations over a good meal. It could be on bible study or board games but basically- a safe space for adults!

17. Have a Team for the Blog

I envision the blog with a team of content managers, lawyers, writers and editors. I can’t take the blog to the height I dream of by running a one-man show. This comes with money and good relationships, so I look forward!

18. A Functional YouTube channel

I started a YouTube channel for the blog a year ago. My goal was to utilize it for video content. YouTube is an exciting platform, and while I look forward to going there, it requires a lot of dedication which IG and TT are already taking from me. Anytime someone recommends it to me, I remember that it’s one of the things I want to do, but I need to take it one step at a time.

Till then, you can subscribe here. I post Youtube shorts on skincare occasionally.

19. Go on a brand-sponsored trip

Imagine an all-expense paid trip with a brand that you love! I want to experience this. Most of the brands that do so usually go for big influencers, but a girl can dream, yeah?

20. Make a more significant investment in my craft

I already invest in my art.

From a yearly blog renewal to paid content classes and even my props. I included this because a significant purchase for the blog would be a camera. This would be for better product photography and video creation. Cameras are pricey, but I aim to get a good one before 30!

21. Own a pet

No, not a dog! A rabbit. I don’t even like touching animals, but my brother’s rabbit has made me rethink pets.

22. Re-join Toastmasters international

Toastmasters is a public speaking club. My first introduction to it was as a med school orators club member. The club was affiliated with Toastmasters, and I thoroughly enjoyed my stay as a student. Now that I’m done, it’s a commitment I want to renew.

Joining a speech club has been one of the best decisions of my adult life. Not only did I learn to speak well, but it’s also helped me create content and build relationships with people. Definitely recommend!

23. Try more foreign dishes

Asides from my native Igbo and Nigerian meals, I’ve managed to try Indian and Chinese dishes. I want to try more Asian meals and any well-cooked meal that looks different from what I’m used to.

24. Makeup like a pro

From not giving a hoot about makeup to learning about it and now doing so myself- my journey with makeup has been exciting.

The next stage for me is actually to do my makeup flawlessly. I believe I’m getting there🤭

25. Visit at least one wonder of the world

I love Indian culture, so the Taj Mahal is high on my dream list.

26. Have a passive source of income

Of course, financial independence is one of the things we all aspire for. One way I think of a passive income source is via digital products. That would mean me creating something that provides a solution for people, even without me being there. I look forward to it!

27. Dust off the cobwebs on my violin

I think this particular one is more of a wish than a reality, but I will just put it here. I got a violin three years ago, and after my initial lessons, I haven’t picked it up again. I even named it Aurora but look at me!

Part of me wants to become a good violin player, but am I willing to do the work? We’ll see!

28. Learn more about my family history and perhaps document it

I believe everyone should learn about their family history. It makes you understand certain decisions and behaviours you notice among family members. You won’t always have everyone around, so have those conversations!

29. Play video games with bae and beat him at it!

Tell him to get ready. That’s all!

30. Have a dedicated home church

My church journey has been the definition of highs and lows. I finally found a place that felt like home but couldn’t continue for long. Having a church community is hard work, but it’s good work. Although I’m part of one now, I still look forward to having that again!

One thing I would not do is stress about hitting every one of these items. I want to be intentional about living, and that’s how I got to write this list. There would be an update, God willing, by 30!

Can you believe I’m writing about 30, lool!

Thanks for reading this far. Which of these can you relate to? Please leave a comment because I’m looking forward to reading them!

5 Ways to Care for Eyelash Extensions to Make Them Last Longer and Avoid Infection: A Beauty Blogger’s First Experience!

beauty-blogger-iruoma-in-pink (1)
how-t-care-for-eyelash-extensions

My first experience with eyelash extensions was on the 20th of May, 2023. Lately, I’ve been loving beauty procedures and trying them out. Eyelash extensions are a great way to enhance your natural lashes and achieve a fuller, longer look. If you’re like me with sparse eyelashes, eyelash extensions are a temporary fix!

However, to ensure your eyelash extensions last as long as possible and avoid any infections, taking good care of them is essential. It was one thing I was afraid of because what’s the point in spending an amount to enhance your look and ending up with an eye infection or losing your money’s worth?

Here are five ways I cared for my eyelash extensions to make them last longer and avoid infection.

Avoid Water and Steam for the First 24-48 Hours

My lash tech emphasized this point while giving me the aftercare instructions.

After getting your eyelash extensions, avoiding water and steam for the first 24-48 hours is important. This means avoiding things like swimming, hot tubs, steam from cooking, and saunas. Water and steam can cause the adhesive to weaken and your extensions to fall out prematurely.

Be Gentle When Cleaning Your Lashes

beauty-blogger-iruoma-on-eyelash-extensions

When cleaning your eyelash extensions, it’s important to be gentle. Use a gentle, oil-free cleanser and a spoolie or your fingertips to clean your lashes. Avoid using cotton balls or pads, as they can get caught in your lashes and can tug on them.

Avoid Oil-Based Products for the first few days.

Oil-based products can weaken the adhesive on your eyelash extensions and cause them to fall out prematurely. This includes things like makeup removers, moisturizers, and sunscreen. Look for oil-free products and avoid applying them directly to your lashes.

Don’t Pull or Rub Your Lashes

It’s important not to pull or rub your eyelash extensions. This can cause damage to both your natural lashes and your extensions. Instead, gently brush your lashes with a spoolie brush to keep them looking neat.

Keep Your Lashes Clean and Dry

how-to-care-for-eyelash-extensions-by-iruoma

Keeping your eyelash extensions clean and dry is key to avoiding infection and making them last longer. Avoid touching your lashes with your hands, as this can transfer bacteria to your eyes.

Bonus tip:

eyelash-extensions-review

6. Don’t sleep on your face.

Luckily, I  sleep on my side, so adhering to this instruction was easy. Sleeping on your face causes you to tug at your lashes, reducing the duration, and you don’t want that.

By following these tips, you can help your eyelash extensions last longer and avoid any infections.

PS: I got mine done at Maramak beauty house in Lagos. You can check her IG page for samples and her contact.

Some frequently asked questions (FAQ) on eyelash extensions

  1. What is the process of getting eyelash extensions done?

Getting an expert in a clean and established beauty salon is important.

It takes 45 minutes to an hour (or more), depending on the type of extension you’re getting and how full your lashes are.

My first experience was with the classic set, which is super light and looks natural because that was my desired look. It last for 45- 50 minutes. Each eyelash extension is attached to the base of your natural eyelash with a semi-permanent glue until your desired look is achieved.

Please note that your eyes must be shut all through, so skip the coffee or anything hindering sleep.

Your aesthetician would clean your lashes and proceed with the steps required to complete your falsies.

  1. Are eyelash extensions safe?

According to this article, eyelash glue and een extensions are not regulated. This means it’s possible to be allergic to glue or even the lashes. Eyelash extensions are made from materials like silk and nylon, so there’s that risk.

Nonetheless, I advocate asking questions about the process AND products, especially when your;e getting a beauty procedure done.

According to Dr. Al- Mohtaseb, using glues with ingredients like butyl cyanoacrylate is recommended com[ared to ingredients like formaldehyde. Ask your tech about the ingredients of the glue.

I didn’t ask about the ingredients despite asking all my other questions. Thankfully I had no reactions to the glue, it was a mistake, and I don’t want you repeating that.

Also, make sure to get reviews about where you’re getting them done to know what to expect.

eyelash-extensions-on-iruoma-osonwa
  1. Are eyelash extensions worth it?

From my experience, yes!

The way my face lit up with no makeup was genuinely incredible.

Getting a classic set done with the services was #10,000, and I wanted to enjoy my money’s worth. My eyelash extensions lasted for four weeks until I got them removed.

Then again, it can be an expensive habit if done regularly. Another thing to note is the possibility of allergic reactions or infections, which must be considered.

a-woman-with-a-spoolie-on-her-eyelashes

Photo of a spoolie by Ashley Piszek on Unsplash

  1. Will eyelash extensions ruin your natural lashes?

No, they won’t. Our natural eyelashes have a growth cycle (apparently!). This means they grow and shed at specific points. During the duration of your eyelash extensions, you will notice them falling off. That’s natural as they are fixed above your natural lashes, and when they shed, the false ones come off too.

All these to say, they won’t ruin your natural lashes so far as you follow the tips to care for them properly.

My natural eyelashes were in good shape when my tech took them out.

  1. How long do eyelash extensions last?

With proper care, your eyelash extensions can look great for weeks. Mine lasted four weeks, and I had to go take them out because they weren’t as full as before, and I needed to get my makeup done for my class dinner.

The key to enjoying this is to take good care of your extensions.

PS: There’s the option of getting fillers. This means every 2-3 weeks; you can go back to your lash tech to refill the extensions that have fallen. Think of it as getting your nail polish done after they’ve chipped off.

Are you ready to get your lashes done, or it’s something you’ll consider?

My simple skincare routine for hyperpigmentation ft RD8 labs, Junederm, and Olaedonaturals

Hey, beauty!

I know it’s been a hot minute since I last published a beauty post. This has been sitting in my drafts since I was done using these products. I miss this skincare routine for hyperpigmentation, as it is simple and effective. As someone who is acne-prone, and has struggled with dark spots and uneven skin tone, I know how frustrating it can be to find effective products that work.

PS: My current routine is different for full disclosure, but that doesn’t invalidate this routine or my experience.

In December, thanks to the help of my community, I won some skincare products described as the holy grail of Nigerian skincare products for hyperpigmentation, and you can imagine my excitement!

My favourite thing about these products is that Nigerian brands made them, and that shows the progress our indigenous beauty industry is making!

Did this combination of products leave a noticeable difference in my skin? Let’s talk about them.

Introduction to Hyperpigmentation

First things first, let’s talk about what hyperpigmentation is.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour. This can be caused by things like sun damage (especially), hormonal changes, acne scars, and inflammation. The result is dark spots or patches on the skin that can be difficult to get rid of.

My Routine For Hyperpigmentation

Now, onto my skincare routine. Here’s what I do:

Step 1: Cleanse with Olaedonaturls Gentle Cleanser

skincare-routine-for-hyperpigmentation-cleanser

The first step in any skincare routine is to cleanse the skin to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. I’ve been using this gentle cleanser for over two months (due to alternating with other cleansers), and its after-effect on my skin always impresses me. It’s non-foaming and doesn’t strip the skin of its natural oils. I love how gentle enough it is to use twice daily, plus it leaves my skin feeling clean and soft.

Cleansing leaves a perfect canvas for the next step.

Step 2: Treat with Junederm discolouration correcting serum

This is the step where I focus on treating my hyperpigmentation. The Junederm discolouration-correcting serum is a potent blend of ingredients that work together to reduce the appearance of dark spots and even skin tone. According to their website, it contains brighteners like:

“5% niacinamide, 2% tranexamic acid, potassium azeloyl diglycinate (PAD), 2% alpha arbutin and oligopeptide-68, “all of which are known to brighten the skin and fade hyperpigmentation.

When I started with this serum, I used it 2-3 times at night before working my way daily. When I tell you that the significant improvement I noticed was no small deal, I mean it! I also noticed a remarkable appearance of my skin.

A friend of mine even commented on how my skin was looking radiant one evening after I had used this serum consistently for over three weeks, and I was so glad!

This was during my final exam preparation, and my skin was “glowing” despite the stress.

Step 3: Moisturize with Rd8 labs Hydra boost Moisturizer

blogger-iruoma-holding-rd8-labs-moisturiser
how-to-use-rd8-labs-moisturiser

After treating my skin with the serum, I follow up with a moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated and plump. According to its founder’s interview, the hydra boost Moisturizer is a lightweight, non-greasy formula specially formulated for humid climates.

The burst of coolness that you get when this moisturizer touches your skin is phenomenal! I love that it absorbs quickly into the skin, and it is lightweight enough for hot weather and all skin types, especially oily skin.

This is one of the moisturizers that my skin has enjoyed other than the Simple hydrating light moisturizer.

Step 4: Protect with sunscreen

hatomugi-no-white-cast-sunscreen-review-by-blogger-iruoma
hatomugi-sunscreen-on-blogger-iruoma-face

Last but not least is my favourite step- sunscreen!

This is a step that many people overlook, but it’s crucial for preventing further hyperpigmentation and protecting the skin from harmful UV rays. My friend once said that half of our skincare is avoiding the sun, and she’s right!

If you’re not applying sunscreen, that’s counterintuitive to treating hyperpigmentation. Worse still, the ingredients in these products could make your skin sun sensitive and worsen your condition, so sunscreen is non-negotiable.

I always use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, even on cloudy/ rainy days.

If you’re not sure where to start with sunscreens, here’s a helpful post on sunscreen as a beginner.

I must tell you that I had other things in my routine that helped my hyperpigmentation treatment, such as exfoliating and the use of anti-oxidants But if you want just four simple steps that pretty much contain the vital ingredients for hyperpigmentation, these would be my recommendation.

Overall, I’ve found that this simple skincare routine has made a huge difference in the appearance of my hyperpigmentation. Of course, everyone’s skin is different, so what works for me may not work for you. But if you’re struggling with dark spots and uneven skin tone, I recommend trying these products!

FAQs

  • What ingredients should I look out for to treat hyperpigmentation?

Several skincare ingredients can help fade hyperpigmentation, such as:

  1. Vitamin C: The most common form is ascorbic acid can help reduce hyperpigmentation by inhibiting melanin production.
  2. Hydroquinone: This topical skin-lightening agent works by inhibiting the production of melanin (this should be prescribed by a dermatologist, in my opinion, as it’s potent and can be dangerous).
  3. Retinoids: These vitamin A derivatives help reduce hyperpigmentation by increasing cell turnover and exfoliating the skin.
  4. Kojic acid: This is a natural skin-lightening agent that works by inhibiting the production of melanin.
  5. Niacinamide: This form of Vitamin B3 can help reduce hyperpigmentation by preventing the process by which melanin pigments are transferred to the skin cells.
  6. Azelaic acid: This ingredient can help fade hyperpigmentation by inhibiting the production of melanin and reducing inflammation.
  • What causes hyperpigmentayion?

Hyperpigmentation can be caused by a variety of factors, including sun exposure, hormonal changes, and acne.

  • How can I treat hyperpigmentation?

My recommendations are to identify the underlying cause of hyperpigmentation and address it, in addition to using topical skincare products. Additionally, it is always recommended to consult with a dermatologist or aesthetician for personalized skincare recommendations.

Please note that fading hyperpigmentation is a journey (as skincare generally is!) and may involve different products targeting the different hyperpigmentation processes. Nonetheless, it’s a productive journey and not impossible.

Do you struggle with hyperpigmentation?

Finally Done: Reminiscing Through 9 Years of Being A Medical Student (Part 1).

My last posting in medical school

Last day of pre-clinicals in 2018

Last exam day with my short coat

Hey, beauty.

I’m clearing out the cobwebs here because it’s been a hot minute! It was for a good reason, as your girl is finally done with school! Did I hear screams? You better scream for joy on my behalf, lol!

I had this long written in my head, and it’s been four weeks since my last paper as a medical student in medical school. The last exam paper I had was on 20th April 2023. My exam lasted ten days, from 11th April to 20th April 2023.

Sharing the news with you was also nerve-wracking because I wasn’t sure where to start. That’s one of the reasons this would be a three-part series. This is the first. The second would be my gratitude list, and the third would be my graduation story.

When I say those were the most stressful days of my life so far, I’m not even joking. What made it stressful was that I had been preparing weeks ahead with more hours assigned to studying compared to other things I enjoyed, like movies, hanging out with friends and sleeping- oh, my precious sleep!

While the world is quick to move on to the next accomplishment, I’m learning to step back and take a moment to absorb the significance of a dream come true. I’ve been stuck “planning” the next thing to do and not realizing the significance of my latest experience.

Our last day of “normalcy” before the pandemic in 2020

Someone I know mentioned how “life” was starting and the ton of exams and stress after finishing medical school. I agree, but one thing I won’t do is let this accomplishment dwindle because of the work to come. Let it come. Others have done it, and everything good will come just in time.

Honestly, it hasn’t felt like things have been in time. For starters, this degree of 6 years took almost 9. I hate when people try to do suffering contest with their responses;

“Oh, just 9? I spent 11 years in medical school.” That is a ridiculous response to give someone confiding in you, but that’s beyond the point of this post.

While the world is quick to move on to the next accomplishment, I’m learning to take a step back and take a moment to absorb the significance of a dream come true.

God worked it out, and while I’m done reeling from the stress emotionally and physically, I just had to give a breakdown of everything!

In 2014 I filled out the JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) form and eagerly put in medicine and surgery. My matriculation was on 23rd January 2015, and a few weeks after, I resumed college.

Would you believe that every year since I resumed in 2015 was marked by at least one academic or non-academic strike?

By 2016, I had moved to the College of Medicine, where I was supposed to spend five years. My time as a medical student was filled with volunteering, serving as the welfare secretary of my association and Yearbook class, attending and planning outreaches, taking a break to enjoy non-medical stuff, and I even fell in love with and started content creation in school!

Meanwhile, studying medicine was not rosy. I was aware of that fact but bruh! The humbling experience was seeing scores I had never dreamed of being a reality for me😂 Fast forward to my first clinical year in 2018. Typically, it takes about two years to be done with clinical, and I was excited at the near end.

Then COVID happened in 2020, and things went from bad to worse.

Symposium Day

It’s a different ball game going through the days, minutes and seconds of those years with uncertainties, questions from family and loved ones, doubts, ugly tears, fear and faith. I share a bit of the struggle on my last birthday post here.

On the 11th of April, 2023, my finals started, and 17 days later, I saw all my results!

Final results day!

I’m glad to be over with this phase. It still feels like a dream, and while I know there’s so much work to be done, especially as a graduate and with adult-ing, I’m grateful to God that it’s another chapter in my life!

The second part of this series is my open letter to those on my gratitude list. These are people who made my journey easier and my load lighter.

Here’s a look, and you might see your name there!

Please share what you would love to see on the blog as well!
